I have lost the rubber washer from inside the classic's steamer thingy - should I just buy another one or is there a decent upgrade as I have never been that impressed with it ?

Did you have problems with the nut on it ?
Don't use it - cut the old wand in half, remove the nut, slide it onto the new Rancillo wand and tighten.
You'll have to thake the rubber off and the steam outlet do fit it, then just pop them back.
