Who had this bright idea? It's like a tea bag but it has coffee in it. Tastes as bad as instant and comes individually wrapped in plastic too. Wrong on every level. What were they thinking? I haven't bought it by the way, a client served it up.

It's fine. I often use it when bivvying.

They've been done for years but probably never sold, pods aren't any better. Grind your beans in the morning and get a Gaggia, that was not a double entendre

It's not fine, it tastes rubbish and uses more plastic. Take a little container of instant when you bivvy.

I tried them whilst camping recently. I'm no coffee snob and quite like instant but even I was underwhelmed by the bags. I'll stick to taking a small tupperware of instant in future.

you need to go 1 strength higher for the bags to work. Sainsburys do a miniature filter unit made out of thin card which works better than the bags. Still a disaster environmentally. instant makes me ANGRY though.

Red Roaster do an awesome coffee in a bag but it’s not available for retail. No plastic involved..

Instant is grim - I’d rather drink cold sheep piss..

That's the ones I've been using. Not the easiest to find at my limited choice of local shops so my default these days is a decent instant (yes, there are some). I still stock up when I see them.

I think they're OK, but I usually take a some ground coffee and a filter cone if I'm camping.

Sounds ideal. Where's the environmental disaster happening?

I use them for work. I tend to just leave the bag in my insulated mug so instead of whipping it out after a few minutes it'll sit there for over an hour. Maybe I'm grim but I like em. Very underwhelming if brewed to the instructions though, I'll agree with that.

Percol are now doing 100% recyclable packaging. I'd also rate theircoffee as better than both Lyons and Taylors. Linky http://www.percol.co.uk/packaging/

That's my only experience of coffee bags... and they're grim!

MIL is quite fond of them.

i quite like the Lyons ones - not as good as proper coffee obviously, but useful in a pinch.

But I'd sooner go without than drink instant.

It was Lyons coffee and it was rubbish. Reminded me of the coffee we'd get when working in schools. Ok, it is wrong on two levels, taste and packaging. No wonder the oceans are full of plastic if we think this is ok. If coffee pods are wrong, and I think they are, then so are these. If that makes me a drama queen then I've just ripped off my tutu and tiara and stamped on them.

Having tried a lot of coffee "bags" for hotels etc I can say these Raw Bean ones are by far the best I've tried.

There was me thinking we had to challenge our attitudes towards our plastic use and our throwaway culture.

Don't mind me.

Carry on.

stevenmenmuir - I'm so sorry that you're suffering from eco anxiety. May I suggest that you repurpose your tutu as a hankie although haven't a clue what you could do with your tiara.

Love from Greta

for camping the jetboil french press adds a whole 20g or something and works well with your choice of coffee. I have not found a lightweight grinder tho 😉

I like the Sainsburys own brand coffee bag tastes pretty good to me. It's not like tea bag that sits in the water brewing. It's a mini filter that clips to the edge of mug has the ground coffee beans already inside and you just pour the water over the top and let it filter through.

Not very eco as the bags are individually wrapped in plastic although the plastic is recyclable. But I believe the filter bag thingy and the coffee will decompose.

Probably not. The coffee will eventually but the filter is, in all liklihood, at least partly plastic, like the majority of tea bags.

It’s fine. I often use it when bivvying.

I used to take them to work (Lyons) Could stick a few in my jacket pocket along with a small container of Coffee Mate & i'd only need hot water, no matter which prison wing/job I was on, without nicking anyone's stash & I didn't need to carry a bloody aeropress round either, looking like a coffee tart.
Top tip, don't treat them like tea bags, leave them in ya cup.
& as for you lot that suggest using instant instead.....GET IN THE SEA!

Coffee tart.

Ipad tart.
I'll send you an unopened tin of Kenco that's been in the cupboard for a month, or is that not good enough coffee?
Mellow Birds maybe?

Wild camp duties it's a bodum press and a tub of grounds. As they say "any fool can be uncomfortable".

Been using an Aeropress for a few years now, once I got the inverted method down its been great! Small enough to pack away in the bag when camping. Though a bit of a pain when more than 1 person.

Grind and in a small sealable container, and then moka pot with camping stove. Though I've only done plain camping not bivvy, so no idea if you can carry that sort of stuff. Not that this may be the requirement anyway. Sounds more like just a grumble about shit code, which is fair enough as there's plenty of that. Especially instant.

I just don't see the point in something that tastes like instant but with a load of extra packaging especially when we are trying to reduce the amount of packaging in the world. If people like the taste, fair enough, it's not for me but each to their own. It's really the amount of plastic involved, especially if you need two of them, that grinds my gears.

For camping I grind my coffee on my EK at work, then vacuum pack it. Make it with a V60 when needed. Tastes pretty good.

I quite like them when staying in hotels or working away etc. Environmentally they can be no worse than the coffee inside of them.

Shipped halfway round the world
Roasted (very energy intensive)
Transported to the supermarket

For zero nutritional value.

The cellophane wrapper is the least of its problems.

Just chuck it in the cup an leave the dregs like most of the world does?

For zero nutritional value

but huge psycho-active, appetite suppression and taste value, especially amongst cyclists!
