Can anyone suggest a nice rural feeling campsite near the sea? Not after a holiday park! Just toilets, a grassy pitch and a beach for the wee boy to play on.

Fidden Farm / Knockvalogan is glorious - been there twice and it was 30 degrees on both days. First time was honeymoon and second was 25 years later.

If you want something more remote, Horgabost on Harris is even more stunning...

Will be there this time next week...

We stumbled upon this site a few years back. http://www.portban.com Beautiful views of Jura, and rock pools a plently. Although, shop and cafe not open on a Sunday, took us a while to figure out why ๐Ÿ™‚

There used to be a brilliant one here http://streetmap.co.uk/map.srf?X=201392&Y=913410&A=Y&Z=120 (useful I know) but there's also one at Altandhu http://streetmap.co.uk/map.srf?X=198899&Y=912260&A=Y&Z=120 their website

As above, Lamlash on Arran. Also, Glenluce, the one in the village, not at the top of the hill or Sands of Luce near Sandhead, both not far from Stranraer.

Sango Bay in durness- gorgeous sheltered bay with interesting rocks. But it's a wee bit of a hike down- the campsite's on top of the bluffs. Paradise for me as a kid but it depends just how wee he is I guess

There's a wee campsite just outside Arisaig, Portnadoran, that we went to a few times as kids. Now it doesn't have its own real beach- it's got a totally tidal beach which leads out to a wee rocky island but is covered at high tide. Which is AWESOME. It's got a wee rocky cove round the corner which smelled. And it's got access to the big sands next door.

If you wanted to veer a bit holiday parkwards, Granny's Heilan Hame at Embo is actually ace- it's pretty lowkey on the "park" side, has a playpark and a clubhouse and that, but they're all a long way from the camp pitches, which have a lovely beach with good sands, some big patches, some good rock pools... And purely coincidentally, just down the road from Golspie, Balblair and Carbisdale

I stayed at Ardmair Campsite in September
http://www.ardmair.com/caravan.html

Just north of Ullapool.

The beach is pebbles but it's a stunning site, decent showers/washrooms and it's got a nicely sheltered area for tents.

It was virtually deserted when I was there and the weather was amazing. ๐Ÿ™‚
Also, being on a spit of land means no midges as it's usually breezy enough to keep the little bastards at bay.

Great campsite in Applecross, not so much for the campsite, more for the area and the Applecross Inn (very high in my favourite pubs in the world ranking!), great road and MTB riding to.

Really liked Shieldaig too.

Fidden +1. Big Sands was midge hell when we were there. Horgabost is great too. Watched moonrise over the sound of Harris from Baile/Berneray. Stunning.

Fidden Farm on Mull.
A couple of sites at back of Keppoch near Arisaig.
Big Sand at Gairloch

Some great recommendations in the first reply.
My wife tends to get stomach upset at Fidden and blames it on the proximity of the stand pipe to the sheep and cows, may or may not be true but the site is lovely and attracts nice people.
Arisaig is a great area, Camusdarach is probably the most midgy of the sites.
Don't be put off when you see big sands named as a holiday park, it is a campsite in feel. The lower tent area does not have great views but the beach is seconds away. The pitches with views can get hit by winds.
Winds can be an issue at the Durness site as well. I had a very entertaining morning in the campervan watching a couple take down a tent in a gale, I genuinely thought they would be blown over the cliff at one stage.
Arran has plenty to do, not too far and you get the Island feel.
Machrihanish also good and Kintyre is a great place and soften ignored in the quest to head North. Carradale on the other side is more sheltered and a very settled bay to paddle in.
Port Ban also mentioned is a nice place although it is a few years since I was their (Do they still have the crazy golf?) and the nearby Kilberry Inn does some cracking food.
Horgabost mentioned is in a sublime place. One day can be like heaven on earth, the next can be gales and pouring down. It is worth it though. I would add that their are a couple of great campsites on the west coast of Lewis too.
Clachtoll great area but i don't think I have been to the site for some reason. It looks great.

If only Achnahaird was still going, we had a walk around the old site mourning it's loss last year.

They are all great, I can't wait to get away again but we are mainly doing east coast and Orkney this year.

There's a campsite on North Berneray that is beside the Youth hostel which has facilities and you can pay there for the pitch and use of facilities. Nice beach there and the other side of the island is glorious. Bit of travel to get to, mind you.

On our way to the Highlands and Islands tomorrow in our camper for 3 weeks - current route takes us to Arran, Loch Fyne, Oban, Mull, Arisaig, Skye, Harris, Lewis, Skye, Applecross, Ullapool, Clachtoll, Scourie and Durness - haven't quite worked out the return route!

Go along to Tongue and down through Alltnaharra or keep going along the coast a bit and head past Forsinard to Helmsdale.

I didn't realise it had closed but there's pretty good wild camping along the coast if you can rough it a little.

Lucky chap.

If you have access to Caravan Club CL's then there is a cracking site at Skerray just further along your route from Durness past Tongue, I would bump Durness for that site in a heartbeat. Altnaharra CC site has some lovely loch side pitches. Unfortunately the trip back down from there is never going to compare to the rest of the route so best kept short.

Ditto. With your back to the toilet block nothing in view was short of stupendous...

However, the new campsite has a pub at the top of the road, hmmm. I'm torn ๐Ÿ˜‰

I need to go visit Reiff again soon. Hmm, might even take the bike and BAM it ๐Ÿ˜€
