A polite note, as this seems to be becoming more prevalant.

Folks advertise a 'CLEAR OUT' on the classifieds, so the excitable/penny pinching/bored like me think "ooh, let's have have a virtual dig through this particular bargain basket of goodies and see what gems we may find" only to open the thread and see a list of three things.

That's not a clear out.

That's three things.

So, the following definitions may help:

> 5 things = just some stuff, put them in the thread title
5-10 things = A few bits and bobs
10-15 things = A clear out
15-20 things = A big clear out
20+ things = Cosmic mega sale

No need to thank me 🙂

So picky, I may state I'm off for a major clear out when in reality I'm only going to the loo!

Not only over exaggerated quantity but also its always all the crap we accumulate from upgrading. Stock posts, bars and stems. Tyres with 80% tred with wooden compounds and concrete beads. Or a set of 1993 XT derailieurs.
Now and again some gems appear but they always seem to be advertised at £5 below the £300 original retail price.

Once again you've been a great audience, I've been PUDD. Goodnight.

People would rip your arms off at the shoulders for those though!

Why not post on the for sale thread you're on about instead of being a little b*tch about it? 😉

I was thinking "massive upgrade or potential project build" myself.

massive upgrade or potential project build

I've always found that if I start thinking of bits I have lying around like that I work out that I *only* need a frame or whatever to make a complete bike and suddenly I'm buying stuff and not selling it...

That is exactly how I ended up with my current single speed, and pre-affixed rotors on my spare wheels.

Massive clear out may be an accurate description if you only have 2 items to clear out. It may be all of your spare bits and bobs, so technically...........

Just saying, like.

3 bikes would be a "clear out" if you started with 4.

Just had a "massive clearout". I'd give it 10 minutes!

Oh and it was only 1 item.

Both reasonable points, but I think that, for the avoidance of confusion, the term "clear out" must have an absolute, rather than relative basis.

Bugger.

I was just about to have a tyre 'clear out' consisting of three pairs of Specialized 2Bliss tyres. Guess I can't now.

Thanks, wwaswas - I like the 'type of thing' caveat! 8)

I've been thinking about this. What about reducing the implied storage space? i.e.:

FS: Small Box Clearout, Bar, stem, saddle.

I have 3 things and I'm selling them all, that is a clearout.
I have 30 things and I'm selling 15, that is not a clearout.
I have 300 things I'm selling I'm a fence and I'll stick to ebay.

I shall go and check in my [s]junk pile[/s] bits box - I think I have some ~93 vintage XT derailleurs.

> 5 things = just some stuff, put them in the thread title

Well, being picky what you have actually written there is greater than 5.

Less than 5 items would be < 5 😀

As has been previously agreed, for the purposes of the STW classifieds 'clearout' is an absolute, not relative term.

Whoops, just realised I may have fallen foul of this new rule. i described it as a 'bit of a clearout', and included some description of the parts on offer too. Is that alright? In total there were 11 items but some were duplicates (eg: 2 pairs of sintered brake pads for only £4 a pair or £7 for both, posted)

http://singletrackworld.com/forum/topic/bit-of-a-clearout-fr-mechs-shifter-grips-shockpump-stem-brakepads

Now some bits have been sold (but still lots remaining) I'll revise my title before reposting.

Hope this doesn't come across as a chance to advertise my clearout, btw. 😉
