im currently in New Zealand, on my travels ive had to buy various electronic items.
apparently according to some bloke i met in macdonalds i can claim all the tax back from them?
is this true? and how can it be done?

Depends on the local laws, in the UK you need to have the VAT receipt and have a completed VAT reclaim form from the vendor.
