I was warned against taking the circle line as a general principle by someone once, but without a satisfactory explanation. Was he talking bobbins? Google thinks it's faster than the Hammersmith and City line to get me from near Aldgate to Paddington.

For that journey it is essentially the same line, just get the first train.
Well Aldgate is a few m closer to this office than Aldgate East I think. Maybe that's where the difference comes from.

IIRC it's not a proper circle anymore. Think it breaks, (probably brakes too) at the west end of the loop somewhere.
Probably, if you are North of Whitechapel High St, just walk to Liverpool St it is only 5 minutes and you will automatically get whichever is first. You can get into the Circle Line and Met Station from the street entrance on Liverpool St itself - much the quickest way.

Historical advice, because it appeared to be more convenient than it actually is. If you've got an google advising you then that advice is at worst likely to be close to the fastest route (bearing in mind walking times at stations varies, which can make a significant difference - I'm not sure how well google factors that in).
It's a teapot now, gives service flexibility and resilience.
Aldgate & Aldgate East are only a couple of minutes walk apart anyway.

Public transport? How positively dreadful!
The main reason the circle line is annoying is the longer than usual waiting time, but that only applies if you have to go around one of the corners where two lines meet. The rest of the circle line is actually made of pre-existing network that has been joined up on a map, so as above your journey will be fine- just take the first available train 🙂

Well I arrived. Took a while though.
You need to look at a proper map and not the stylised tube map. For some journeys the circle line is a very bad choice. Back of the envelope method is to count stations - more stations = more time and thus slower than changing. Other key "insiders tip" is to look at walking to another station and not just getting on closest one.
There are apps to help inc TFL and Google is decent enough
I think I am wrong and have besmirched Njee, Wonga are opposite the Tube which is not on the Crescent.
You can't wear a topper on the circle line.
Hammersmith and City line though...

I'm just going to have to say what everyone's thinking... you know that would put you straight into Nidd? Unless you are playing the Wonga Variation, but strictly speaking that lapsed following the 1997 Salamanca Concord, so that hardly seems likely 😆

A good rule of thumb is 3 minutes per station.
Citymapper app is my choice for finding various different options of how to get around London
District from Tower Hill to Embankment, then Bakerloo to Paddington.
If there's any delays on District, Circle, or the H and C, the Circle line gets hit first.
