Hi

My six year old has expressed interest in guitar. I don’t want to spend loads as it might not get played but I also don’t want a toy guitar that will not play well.

Thanks in advance

Perhaps better starting with Uke at that age?
Gets them used to holding a neck and strumming, but a lot easier and smaller.

Otherwise I'd look at a 1/2 size classical. Plenty about. I wouldn't worry too much on quality, as it will get dropped and knocked.

Nylon strings on ukes or classicals are much easier on little fingers.

Look on somewhere like Gear4music or Thomann, their cheaper own brand stuff is generally ok.

Don't bother going mini electric at that age. The cheap ones are generally horrible to set up, and don't sound very nice + you'll need an amp, etc.

My lad started out on a 3/4 acoustic with nylon strings. Got it from the local music shop (Rimmer's) for about £40.

Definitely not a toy. It lasted him until he went to a full sized and withstood the beating that it got being lugged to school once a week for a couple of years for lessons.

Electric or classical?

At 6 you probably want a smaller sized guitar for small hands - unfortunatley these are often more toy than instrument.

If he is big enough then the cheapest squier strats (around £100) are good for electric, and www.thomann.de sell Harley Benton guitars that also get good reviews, although sometimes need a bit of setting up when they arrive. You will also need to budget for an amp, cables etc, although for a beginner these can be had for just a few quid. Often available second hand from ebay etc as a package for very little cash.

For acoustic they go pretty small, so a 1/8 sized Yamaha or similar for £60-100 is worth looking at. I personally wouldnt go ukelele as the chords/tuning etc are different to guitar.

Youtube is good for lessons (although you have to search through the trash sometimes), or for electric the game Rocksmith is a really good way to get started on playing songs - it's pretty old but still available - note you need a special cable to play as well as the game, although the cable is the same for all versions (xbox, PC, playstation).

🙂

My kid also a guitar around the age of 6...we got him a 3/4 one from a amazon for around £60....total waste of money...he badly touched it.

Fast forward to last year (aged 13 now)....his school was doing lessons(8 x 1/2 hr), we signed him up...lesson 1
He got to play electric ...he came home all excited...so we got him a electric guitar ( squaire strat used for £99)
He did 6 out of those 8 lessons because the corona virus then shut the schools..so during lockdown he was doing utube....now 11 months later he is amazing...didn't want a ps5 for Xmas....a new guitar...
He even got me taking it up...and its well hard but I find it relaxing...ive been playing for 7 months and I'm where he was , when he played after 2 months...ha ha ha...kids are like sponges

Thanks so much for the swift responses. I’m thinking classical just to get her going.

Thanks again.
