I have the worst ever recorded case of manflu and have quite a bad chest infection.
I cough violently which shakes my spine and the base of my neck every minute or so and gunk comes to my mouth.
My question is do you spit this out or can you swallow (fnarr fnarr)?
I'm going for a meal tonight and spitting is not my favourite option

Chew before you swallow.

My question is - are you well enough to go out for a meal? 😯

I've had one for the last week too, still not great.

Doctor has told me to spit into a tissue if possible as it's your body getting the infection out. And what you cough up is the mucus that is causing the chest infection.

The chewy aspect is the result of your bodies immune system attacking the infection. Better out than in. Your stomach will digest it but you'll have to shit it out & that will be most unpleasant….

Spit it up every now & then, just to take a look. If it's pretty colours and you feel really poorly, consider seeing your doc.
Swallowing is Ok

When you say pretty colours...

mine has turned from a fetching mustard yellow to a more olive green - am I going to die ?

I think the yellow is pus, I'm not sure what the green stuff is.

I had this earlier this year. What I thought was just a cold lasted from the beginning of January, after a dose of Norovirus, and lasted until the end of March, although, tbh, I've really not felt 100% all year. I honestly never knew the human head could produce such huge amounts of snot, or cough up such large amounts of vile goo. Deeply unpleasant. 🙁

Swallowing can lead to Gastro-enteritis so spit that gunk out.

I think I'll pass on the meal. It's kind of yellowie in colour. Is this ok or do I need a doctor.
It's bloody annoying and has been going on for about a week.
Is there anything to can recommend to stop my brain shaking cough?

Ahhhhhhh.

I luckily rarely catch the leurgie, but today I have been descending rapidly in an excel/emotional-laptop-crisis/sore throat/cough/heavy eyes state.

I couldn't understand why as I haven't noticed anyone else that's got a bug.

However, reading this, I must have caught it from here.

Thanks for the excuse for hot toddies 😀 *hic*]

EDIT: For OP, get rid. Surely that's what your body is trying to do?!
