Someone just phoned me up about a contract in the City which got me thinking. For how much do we think a place to stay could be had for bloke + bike? I'm guessing somewhere in South London away from a tube station.. I wouldn't mind if it's a bit scruffy but I'd like to at least retain posession of my commuter bike. Weekday only would work, but a 7 day place would help because I could leave stuff there.

You could get a cheap studio flat in E1 for around £200 a week

Which side of town do you need to be to be able to flee from at the weekends?

my mate lodged with an old dear for under £50 a week.

She also made him a roast dinner ever night - and complained if he didn't want it. He said it was like living with your nan!

Look for something on the Gumtree, there's usually load of accommodation on there and you tend to get quite a few who want weekday only lodgers 😀

Extraction zone is Paddington, but I don't mind riding there from the City which is where I'd be leaving from.

Last time I did this I had a shared room in Wandsworth for £250/mo but that was in 2000. It was a bit like one of those reality TV shows but without the laughs.

Fortunately, £200/week is now not out of the question.. but if there were a cheaper option further out... Have bike will cycle. In fact a longer commute would do me good.

I used to have a flat near paddington (Maida Hill/Westbourne Park) and it's a lovely ride into the City, loads of low traffic routes.

Id look at Westbourne Park then for cheaper studios. Anywhere further east will be v pricey.

1 bed in a flat share from £150 pw in W9

Hyde park bench and a copy of the Daily Mail (though broadsheets give better coverage...)

When I used to cycle in along the towpath from Richmond to the city there were a couple of folks who lived out of tents on the banks of the thames near kew gardens - always appeared to have certain advantages I quite envied. Not sure how long they got away with it for.

So.. it's quite doable then.. now the question is, do I want to go back to contracting? 😥
