I'd have a look in Cex / Cash Converters for a cheap used handset, but bear in mind that whatever you get you'll need something either running or capable of being modded to Android 4.4 (Kit-Kat) or higher.

Watch the data costs, I heard a few stories of kids running up massive bills from Pokemon.

i use my phone as wifi hot spot so data hopefully shoudnt be a issue

Also check if the phone has a compass and gyroscope, it seems these are needed for some features.

Bought our eldest a moto g 3rd gen for £99 from John Lewis to replace an aging 4S. Works really well with Pokemon Go. He's slowly getting over it not being an Apple device!

I was thinking around £50 but It may have to be more by the sounds of it

I have a spare Samsung S4 mini running Cyanogenmod rom with android 6(marshmallow),
Have tried Pokemon go on it and it runs fine.

It's had a new outer screen which has delaminated in one corner but doesn't affect its use.
