I stopped at the ballantrae on york place in march, reasonable and had free parking! quite near st andrew square. room 10, fourposter and cracking views across the firth of forth.

travelodge on rose street is fine for a 1min trip to wetherspoons for breakfast

It's a B&B about 5 min in a cabs from Royal Mile - excellent, comfortable and free parking
There are none, there are only expensive good hotels and cheap grotty ones.
It's the peak tourist season,and the annual onanistic assemblage of Festival W**ks and Meedja types from London, plus the Tattoo, so this is not a good time to try and find bargain rooms. Stay in Penicuik it's only a maroon bus away and mostly harmless.
