To me help you ton.... Chaplin/The Great Dictator......McCarthy......accusations...of Hollywood communist conspiracy......Chaplin exile in Switzerland.....Dr Strangelove/Peter Sellers...satire of anti-communist witch-hunts........"That's the way your hard-core Commie works"...... classic line from Dr Strangelove.

There's a reason why Chaplin lived his final days in Switzerland, and The Great Dictator is part of the reason. HTH. No need to thank me.

Sorry for the typo at the start of my previous post and the lack of detail - I was rushing to go out to see Isla St. Clair at my local trade union club (she was excellent btw, a seriously talented woman - I had no idea)

The Great Dictator wasn't of course Chaplin's only film with a serious political message among the usual slapstick comedy, all his films to varying degrees focused on the plight of the poor and those struggling against authority and 'the system', often highlighting what he saw as the moral superiority of the poor and powerless underdog.

'Modern Times' made 4 years earlier focused in particular on the dehumanisation effect of modern production methods on ordinary people. In this scene, which later proved to be ironic and provide remarkable if unexpected insight, our hero is mistakenly arrested for being a suspected communist agitator.

16 years later Chaplin himself was barred from entering the USA for being a suspected communist sympathiser.
