Just had a go at doing this and the screws holding the element on are so stuck that I broke the screwdriver
I was thinking of using some plus gas or something, but surely this isn't a good idea in an oven
any ideas?

Any penetrating oil should be okay as long as you don't have the oven on while you are working on it. Also might be worth heating the oven a couple of ties before putting food in it.
