I've undone the 4 screws but nothing has loosened. Anyone know what else needs doing?

Been a while since I did one but I think you take the inside mechanism cover off and then work it out from there.

Pretty sure that's the first step.

When you say “undone” , you have removed them completely haven’t you ?*

If yes , then it might just need a little bit of persuasion. There will be a bracket that screwed to the door that the main bit clips on

*Sorry if that sounds patronising

Yes, screws taken right out. The inside 2 screw into metal ,the outside 2 into wood.

Which direction should I bash it?

Bash it gently on the opposite side to the screws.

Put the 'inside' screws back 2 or three turns each and then give them a light tap each with a hammer (or a mallet if you have one)

The lever mechanism should just wiggle off. There will be a bar that connects the lock barrel to the lever mechanism through the door, that might be holding things all tight.

The lever part could be hooked behind a steel plate which will be fixed to the door. To remove it you should gently tap it to the left whilst pulling it towards you. Once you have remove the lever part you will be able to access the screws which retain the cylinder. I hope I’m making sense?

What sandboy said, the body will be fixed to a steel plate - once then screw are removed wiggle it backwards and away from the door to reveal the bolts holding the cylinder in place. The real fun is putting it back together.
