here goes, I ride a Stumpy-Elite 2009 and when riding fast on the rough stuff the chain can jump off, do i have to convert to the dual front cogs and a bashguard with a holding wheel or are there other options to sort the tension issues ?
today it went Pete Tong and took out my XTR rear derallieur and more importantly lost me the great pace racing against a younger rider doh

What gears are you running at the moment? A triple? If so, get into your big ring and some where in the middle of the cassette for bumpy stuff, keeps the chain tensioned.
yes pal a triple and i was on the middle, I will get back onto the big ring like you say, I used to but have found myself on the middle more recently
Also check if your front mech is properly positioned.
