Just given a plumber the nod to replace our boiler. At our request he quoted for 2 different boilers, the only difference between them being the hot water flow rate (It's a combi boiler system)
Our shower is straight off the mains pressure via the boiler and is fine as it is, so is it worth having the better boiler of the 2 new ones with the improved flow rate for £100 or so extra?

Any opinons?

🙂

I'd go for one with the better flow rate for sure

Depends on the mains water pressure - if the pressure is below the rating of the lesser boiler then pointless paying the extra. Get the plumber to test flow rate.

If it's just for the shower, probably not. If you like lots of baths or need lots of hot water on demand then maybe. Lots of variables relating to your circumstances to consider, but if £100 isn't very much as a percentage of the total bill then it may be a good idea.

Do you really need to replace the boiler:

Yup. We need to move it out of the kitchen for sure, and we're 90% sure it qualifies for the scrappage scheme right now. Silly not to replace it as we're already having to move it! 🙂

That surely depends what state it's in and the cost difference between the two - certainly not something I'd take as given based on the payback periods I've seen for new boilers.

You can check on the scrappage scheme website if your boiler is candidate. Also, remember not to get the work done until you have your voucher - for some reason it is a condition of the scheme.

Oh and ref the Telegraph thing "Even with the £400 voucher, and even with the additional £400 offered on top of that by some big companies, you will still be lucky to get change out of five or six grand."

What tosh - usual Torigraph scaremongering. Just had mine boiler replaced by British Gas with a Worcester Bosch unit for £1700 (including rebate and their discount)

Jeff Howell talks out of his arse a lot of the time, ask an expert not someone paid to write.

The most telling thing was he said "in my opinion". At least the boiler manufacturers have done some testing rather than writing an opinion.

Although there are parts that are partly true, he embelishes them somewhat.

I'd go for the better flow rate...we used to have a tiny flat with mains fed shower right next to boiler. In winter we use to have to slow the flow down as the water wasn't heated quick enough. If either of the two hot taps in the flat was turned on, the shower would go cool. Obviously a low spec boiler, but we had relatively good water pressure and pretty low demand on the boiler.
