I'm after a bit of electrical advice.
I'm changing a ceiling rose over that appears to be on the end of a wiring loop but the two N wires are identical with no indicator of which is switched live.
The red L wires I've put in a junction block & left unconnected. The Earth wires are connected up to the E wire on the new light fitting.
There is one light switch fitting. I wired up each of the identical black N wires to the N & L wires on the new fitting figuring that I had a 50/50 chance of it working correctly. The thing that is confusing me is that which ever way I wire the two N wires to the N & L new wires, the light operates correctly. Is this right?
The two blacks you have are neutral from the consumer unit and switched live returning from the switch.
Ideally neutral should go to the neutral terminal and the switched live to Live but as long as it's not an edison screw fitting you'll be ok (live should be the centre pin on a screw fitting).
Do you have a multimeter? If so, disconnect the two blacks from the light fitting. Test between each to earth. Only one will show voltage. This is the switched live. Mark this with some brown or red tape and put it in the Live connection.

I didn't have a multimeter but I did have an electrical mains tester screwdriver which did the trick.
