I have been given the job of sorting and obtaining an approximate value of a family members cd collection. I would guess there’s around 3000 cds from every artist under the sun not itemised in any way. Many are limited editions. Does anyone know of any sites I can get any information from. I’ve had a quick look but nothing seems to be listed except very rare Japan only released ones. Is it a trawl through sold items on the bay.

The default answer would normally be MusicMagpie, I think. Don't know how well it handles more obscure special editions.

Tbh if you have the time a more itemised approach probably makes sense: for the more common stuff, check out musicmagpie or similar; for the more obscure, eBay plus any more niche music shops.

Music magpie offer v little. An old school music shop may be interested, otherwise its piece by piece in ebay or maybe a collector.
As a cd collector this stuff is problematic...3000cds is £30k when bought, but vinyl now outsells cd as everyone has a streaming setup and doesnt want the money and space investment in a physical source.

If i can offer any insight then let me know

Ian

Discogs would give you an idea whether a title is something people are actually paying for.

There are phone apps that can scan the barcode, and look up the details for the CD. Probably quicker and easier than typing it all in. Though if really obscure, may not be found in the database.
Looks like the Discogs app can do that?

Look for any SACDs. Some of them go for hundreds of pounds each!!

If it’s CDs then the closest approximation of value is next to bloody nothing...

Are you doing it for a valution or something? Because it's basically not worth doing much research and just saying a quid a CD.

Discogs is the obvious place to look for information and a value. There are some CDs that are worth a fair bit, I sold one for £157 the other day and have sold a few others around the £50 mark. The CDs that are worth the most are DCC gold discs, MFSL gold discs and early rare presses of bands like the Beatles, Pink Floyd etc. SACDs also go for decent money.
