Does a higher load rated tyre have thicker sidewalls and hence give a harder ride?

See what you mean, but they're stronger, not necessarily thicker.
I replaced 91s with 94s and can't tell the difference in ride, but they're a different make and type of tyres anyway so not a good comparison!
