I have a Fiat Multipla 1.6 petrol that has just conked out. Its been running a bit odd for about two weeks. It will drive fine but when it warms up it will hold back and not rev and sometimes barely pull away from junctions. Yesterday it did the same thing but conked out completely. The first time it did it it restarted and drove fine.Ten mins later it conked out again and now refuses to start and has had to be recovered to the local garage we use.
Fuel pump runs and has a good spark so I assume the ecu is not happy about something. I have a diagnostic scanner but it reports no faults and the engine light is not on.
Any ideas?
Fuel starvation? Replace fuel filter did it in my diesel. Guessing vacuum advance is something from the past?
Not familiar with that engine, but it does sound like it could be fuel starvation.
Fuel pump running doesn't necessarily mean it isn't shagged. Also, it could be pumping away fine but the regulator isn't keeping pressure high enough in the fuel rail. I'd get a pressure gauge onto the fuel rail and see what's what. Get it on the end of some hose so you can see it while driving, it might look fine at idle due to low demand for fuel.
This may or may not be total bollocks if your intake system doesn't work like an RV8, which is all I really know...
I would think its possible the car is running on 'choke', so when it gets hot it gets starved of oxogen, it could be as simple as a temperature sensor, or a MAF or lots of other things really. If your in the AA or similar then they will do a diagnostic check at the side of the road for free so that would be a good starting point.
Cheers.
go to a fiat specific forum/site they should have info on how to get the car to report any sensor fault.
Have a look at the spark plugs - the condition of the plugs will indicate whether it's fuel starved or too rich (it's what we did before we had fault codes!) See http://www.theultralightplace.com/sparkplugs.htm
Another possiblity for problems when hot (this happened to a mate of mine and was really hard to diagnose) is a fuel line adrift from its clips and too close to the engine, vapourising the fuel before it reaches the injectors (or carburettor)
