MegaSack DRAW - 6pm Christmas Eve - LIVE on our YouTube Channel
Looking to get a towbar fitted to one of our cars.
Brink/Thule or Westfalia seem to offer lowest price for a detachable one, which is what I would prefer. Will be used to tow a max 600kg trailer or Thule towbar mounted bike rack.
So....any of them better quality or all much the same?
Our local fitter is using Towtrust ones...
Thanks.
They all need to meet the same specification regarding strength and durability.
If you are heading down the detachable route, I had a Brink one that jammed.
Westfalia, if French, is a Siarr manufacture and they were not shotblasting 18 months ago, which means the paint can fall off. Not such an issue if it is hidden.
No experience of Towtrust. I think British?
More important decision is the electrics, if it's a new car you want vehicle specific electrics not universal. If you mess up with the universal fitting (tapping into harness), you could have a really big bill on a new car.
Also you should match the connectors for trailer and bike rack. 7 pin or 13.
Westfalia, without a doubt, especially for their swan-neck detachables.
Have had them on my last three cars and the looked as good as new when I sold them as they did when first fitted. Also, Westfalia's "vertical socket" means that it's often possible to get an invisible install more easily than with other bars that come out horizontally and need either an ugly bumper cut, or leave a lump of pig-iron hanging below. The Westfalia kit is all hidden behind and the bar curves round under the bumper.
One other note: get proper electrics. OEM if you can, but at the very least CAN integrated (assuming your car is modern). Don't, whatever you do, have them splice individual wires into the light clusters!
As a note on 7 pin vs 13 pin, I'd always go 13 pin as the socket is mechanically superior, and use a 7-pin adapter which is easily replaceable for a few quid. and almost invisible on the socket.
I had a Westfalia on the previous car that was a factory fitted swan neck detachable.
Current car I had a Towtrust swan neck detachable fitted. It's as good as the Westfalia, without question.
Would have no problem fitting another.
As above the Westfalia was not seen when reomved as is the Towtrust.
When it's not on the car then you wouldn't know it has a bar fitted. It also has the vertical coupling and no visible bumper cutting.
We got ours through Towsure, think it's a Witter one. It's detachable and you'd hardly know there was one fitted when the ball's removed. The guy doing the fitting was very good, he's mobile so can fit wherever and whenever you choose.
We went 13pin so we get fog and reversing lights, they threw in an adapter for any old 7 pin stuff we may come across.
