How can a car be taxed to till 01 June 2018 when the MOT ran out on the 17 March 2017? This is what is shown on the GOV.UK website.
You cannot get a car taxed without a valid MOT certificate so don't understand this.

if the tax was paid in advance and the owner hasn't changed it will still show as valid.

strange, as mine wouldn't auto-renew as my MOT was out of date by a month... que one panicy friday afternoon trying to get an MOT booking for the next day

I see what you are saying here. That is a strange one as there is more than 12 months between the two. Have you checked the MOT history on the GOV site specifically for that ?
Maybe a glitch in updating the main site with the MOT details ?
