Looking for a new car, £8k max cash plus p/x or whatever I get for my current car, I think about £1500. must be reliable, cheapish to insure (I started driving in feb so no NCB) the bigger boot the better. High scores on safety. I will do around 4k miles a year at the most, so mpg isn't a huge factor. If it looks nice then that's a bonus. I know very little about cars so I'm finding it a bit difficult narrowing it down, mechanic mate said beware of Alfas and Fiats, but I think they look the best.

a volvo estate might be worth a look too
Passat/Mondeo estate. Petrol ones should be cheaper. Why big boot? If you have large load requirements then a Berlingo type thing, or a Peugot Partner etc.
[hijack] What car are you getting rid of, out of interest?[/hijack]
don simon hit it on the head.. any skoda will do the job octavia has space and is frugal and looks half decent

Could I have that in writing, please?
Octavia less roomy than the others, and looks gash 🙂
Peugeot 407 2.0HDi Estate. Comfy, pretty, spacious and reliable. Cheap too (to buy, insure and run).
Conqueror - Membera volvo estate might be worth a look too
Indeed. I say this every 'what car?' thread. Volvos are the bees knees.
That's right Molly, you think the Octavia looks gash and I think the Mondeo looks gash. Cleary in the battle of subjectivity, you win.
All I said was that Octy's look gash - that might not be an issue 🙂 In all seriousness though they are not particualry big being based on a Golf.
Thanks for the suggestions 🙂
I'm getting rid of an MG ZR 105+, it's been tinkered with (not by me) and has some daft exhaust, a chip and some suspension thing that seems to be the equivalent of turning a FS into a rigid. The sills need sorting and the sun roof leaks, the electric windows work on occasion and the interior has lost most of it's trim. I didn't buy it, I swooped furniture for it and a weekends labour, it was my sisters. It's been fine to learn in and all, but it's time to go.
I saw a BMW 5 series today for £8995, it's so ugly I like it. But maybe a but too big and prestigious.
interesting, more or less matches our criteria, will check some of these out. Was thinking another ocatvia (our current car is an 04 1.6 octavia estate, if that interests anyone then happy to sell rather than trade it!), a mondeo, mazda 6, V50 estate or something like that. Needs to be big enough to pull a caravan, although the Octavia will pull it, it does struggle up bigger hills, so thinking something around the 2.0 mark
Lambo/zonda?

How big's the van? Octy would only be able to tow a light van I'd expect. You'd be much better off with a Passat/Mondeo size imo.
How big's the van?
Size is irrelevant, its the weight of the caravan that matters. The gross weight, aka MTPLM.
We only bought a small van, as it needed to be something that the octavia would tow - it's a 92 Avondale Mayfly, 950kg unladen. Was thinking more along 2.0 mondeo, 1.9 diesel octavia, maybe a v50. The caravan club have an online outfit matching thing so you can see how your car matches your caravan

Clearly I meant weight, since it's the crucial figure 🙂

Thanks for suggestions, I really like Mazda 6s, my dad has one and I fancy something different. His has the Bose Stereosa which sounds fantastic.
