I have some JBL ceiling speakers that aren’t being used anymore, they’re 8ohms, can I use them in the car ??? Car stereos are 4ohms.

The jbls are the correct size for the Toyota avensis rear doors.

Thanks in advance

Make that plan b and see if someone with greater knowledge of stereo equipment turns up.

If I remember, it should work but you will have less rated power. Over heating might be a problem with an in dash head unit though.

They will absolutely work with no risk of equipment damage or over heating. The problem most likely to occur is they will be quieter (this this is affected by a few other parameters too) and your amp (or just headunit) won’t be able to deliver its max output power into them. But no risk of damage, so see how you get on.

Would 4 ohm speakers cause problems with an 8 ohm head unit cause problems?

they will work fine but the volume will be half that of 4 ohm speakers as the 8 ohm have twice the resistance.

Bsims yes, the drivers will ask for twice the current to get the same volume so may clip or overheat.

Depends on how loud you go.

Using speakers with a higher resistance shouldn't damage the amp or speakers.

Using speakers with a lower resistance than recommended could cause problems.

<pedant> impedance not resistance as signal is AC </pedant>

Good point, well made. 🙂

<megapedant>Both impedance and resistance, and if it was impedance only, that would be because it is zero for DC, resistance still affects AC.

[super_mega_pedant]Would have been more impactful with </megapedant> close.[/super_mega_pedant]

I knew there was some issue when typing but couldn’t recall what it was so didn’t want to be too definite in my first post. A little bit of knowledge is dangerous though! Can be very dangerous when electricity is involved.
