[Closed] Car steering rack grinding

The car suddenly started making noise when parking up this morning.

Any movement in the steering results in a loud grinding noise, sounds almost like rough metal plates rubbing together.

Any ideas clever people? My first thoughts were CV joint, anything else to consider?

The main concern is the 50 odd miles still to cover to get it to the garage - safe to do so?

EDIT: Ford Fiesta, 15 plate, 36k miles.

broken spring?
Track rod end?
checked power steering fluid level (assumign it's not electric assist)
wheel bearing?
loose disk/caliper
Loose wheel
bodywork damage
loose rack/anto roll bar/suspension arm?
loose steering column
power steering pump/motor

Put on full lock and check clearance around the tyres and the inner wing guards.

Wifes car makes a horrible noise, the tyres just catch the plastic guards

Call Ford Assist, they're like AA/RAC/etc. Will come out& diagnose, and if it requires a tow/recovery, they'll do that too. Chances are it'll be covered by warranty.

You have been getting it serviced, right?

Sounds very much like a broken spring , loud grinding if you turn the steering quickly? If you turn the steering slowly does the noise still happen.
If you can remove the wheel and have a careful look at the spring , sometimes they can poke out where broken and touch wheel - or worse tyre.
If you are in the AA or similar you could ask them to have a look - 50 miles is a long way.
