We're planning on hiring cars for parts of a Canadian trip and it looks like the insurance excesses could be quite high.
It seems like there's plenty of companies offering a policy to insure the excess risk. Any companies to recommend?

ihirecarinsurance.com

Think I got them from moneygosavingsupermarketexpertcompare or one of those sites.

Beware though - I was having a read of mine...seems I'd have to pay the excess and then claim from them (and they have a good record of paying up) but you should have space on a CC to pay the excess should the worst happen.

I used Direct Car Excess ( http://www.direct-carexcess.co.uk) for a short holiday in Greece last year - linked from MSE iirc. Cost about £9, versus the £50 it would have been with Avis - and it is done as a pay upfront and claim it back if you need to.

And I did need to - a pothole claimed 2 tyres and a supposed cost of 400 Euro. Claims process was straightforward, quick, and I soon had a cheque to cash for the full amount. Would definitely use them again.

double check that your travel insurance for canada doesn't cover already

as said downside is you pay up front to hire co in event of damage - used "worldwide" for a long time no claims but a friend that had side torn of a car in Geneva got paid back prompt by them no hassle

This. I use it but haven't had to claim. My inlaws used it when a rock fell from a cliff in France, they paid the £1000 excess, got is back as soon as they got back to the UK.

Used Questor for several years. Claimed twice and it was painless. They reimburse you so you need some wiggle room on your CC. The annual worldwide policy works best for me.

Mrs Sandwich discovered that there is a bigger card retention by the hire company if you use your own waiver insurance. You may need to have a second card if your limit is a small one on the card.
