Hi my mondeo TDCI 130 has today decided to cut out on me twice. Driving along normally doing about 60mph and the other time waiting to turn right at a junction its as if the ignition is turned off. It will restart after a few seconds, there are no funny noises, smoke, loss of power before or after I restart, the car then drives fine with normal power etc until the next time, what seems to set it off is the glow plug light suddenly flashes on the dash and then it cuts out. Called the AA and they did a diagnostic check which came back with P1000 and P1000+ but was unable to tell me what the codes meant, anyone have any ideas or experience of this , thanks in advance....

I've got some experience, unfortunately it wont be too useful to you!

My old 130 did the same thing 3 times on a trip down to London and 3 times on the way home! Had some contacts at the Ford R&D site there who recommended changing out a relay (cant mind which one now) but it made naff-all difference. The next step was changing out the lifter pump in the fuel tank...... The chances of their being any useful fault codes recorded for this sort of failure are very slim.

I sold the car.

Of more use, Google will throw up things such as "
The P1000 code is a general code that is developed when the PCM and GEM havnt gone through there full diagnostic 'drive cycle'."

After it cuts it will it crank but not fire up?..if so it could possibly be the camshaft sensor.quite common on that engine.

Re-starts fine by the looks of it. The symptoms are exactly the same as the trouble I had by the sounds of it.

The glow plug light flashing means nothing more than "you're about to spend money"

2nd the camshaft sensor. The exact same symptoms on my focus tdci, same fault code which is ment to be a low fuel pressure warning, which is why the fuel pump is suggested, I got the same suggestion.
The sensor fitted should be less than 50 quid so its a cheap place to start, a new litter pump is over 300.
Mine was fine 30000 miles later when I sold it. Good luck.

Thanks for the quick response guy's, when it cuts out and stops it does let me turn it over straight away, but does not always start on the first attempt. Have had a look on a few of the forums on various sites, but most seem to mention smoke, noisy rough engine, safe mode and reduced power etc when this happens to them I have none of that. Before and after it restarts it is fine until the next time, so frustrating and on B H weekend ARGHHHH !

P1000 is set on fords after the fault codes have been cleared, which means the retards that are the AA kindly cleared the faults for you without noting what ones were there to start with.

Glow plug light is used to warn that a fault has been detected, so there would of been faults stored. Best option is to drive it until it does it again, then get somebody competent to check for faults.

As others have said - the glow plug light is used as a general engine fault light - it come on if the engine goes into limp home mode for example.

I'm led to believe diesels with high pressure injection systems (ie tdci) will cut out completely if the get (or think they have) low fuel supply/pressure, as the common rail injection system needs to be properly filled with fuel at all times to avoid damage. As such it's worth having a look at the fuel pump /filter etc I guess.

Out of interest do you have 1/4 of a tank or less when this happens or does it happen whenever?

could be the egr valve is blocked or the dpf regen fluid has run out and it cant do a regeneration hence why it will happen at randm times.

this happended on my tdci focus cmax .

In my experience a ****ed camshaft sensor will send the car into limp (safe) mode. Peruse this

It's only today that I have ever had this happen and the car has just under half a tank of fuel in it.
So many things it could be, some cheap to fix and some more than the car is worth, seen everything from fuel filters, cam sensor, crank sensor, fuel pump, injectors etc. Going to ring the garage in the morning to try and get it on a proper diagnostic machine to get a code that hopefully means something, but from what some people say they can be misleading and point you towards the wrong thing. My head is spinning.....

start with the sensors and work from there. Crank sensor is a common issue, but usually you'll have issues with the instruments going on the blink too.

The lifter pump would be pricey, injectors are pricey too as they need matched to the ECU. Unfortunately a Ford garage may well charge in the region of £80 for the privilege of just plugging it into the diagnostic kit

Good luck!

There is a garage locally who has one of the "Snap on" diagnostic machines and knows how to use it. According to some of the threads I have seen on the forums they are supposed to be a very good bit of kit, will be speaking to him first thing in the morning. But will defo start with the cheap option ie sensors, fuel filter first, unless there is something very obvious showing up on the machine. Thanks for the good luck, I think I am going to need it ......
