Do the likes of takeaway food delivery drivers who use their own car need business use insurance? I’m presuming yes, if wanting to be legally covered.
Yep. Their car insurance would be likely to respond to a claim for injury to a third party as its compulsory liability for the insurer, but they would most likely find themselves on the receiving end of a claim by the insurer to indemnify it for any losses it has had to pay to the third party.
I occasionally travelled to and from client offices or sites for meetings, but I was told I had to have business cover just for that.
Yes. Probably a level above those who just use a car to get about on business. When I had business use cover, it specifically excluded carrying any goods.
Yes, my son had to extend his to do part time deiveries. My insurance specifically excludes it.
The quick answer is yes they do. How many actually have the correct cover is another questions. I would imagine working for one of the larger national fast food joints or the likes of Deliveroo you would have to provide your certificate but if you work for a local pizza joint or whatever they probably don't care.
There's a pizza place near us and the delivery car is barely road legal and I doubt they fork out for full business cover for example.
yes, I suspect its enhanced business Insurance. I have class 1 business (I think its still called that) that allows me to travel to different sites to work. It doesn't allow me to do multi drop deliveries
I'd imagine takeaway food drivers should have a higher level as its for hire or reward. I wonder how many actually know that or check they are correctly insured?
It's typically class 3 business use. It can be quite expensive!
However, most decent delivery companies (!) will provide a contingency cover that bolts over and above the existing car insurance and effectively provides cover ONLY when it's being used to deliver. The reason being that if they allowed a callow youth to buy the right thing, at huge cost, there's a million things that can go wrong.
Good info, thanks
