What’s the best option for taking out car hire abroad now (Spain)? Go with the rental company or purchase some beforehand ?

I’m not sure the question makes sense?

I guess the key word "insurance" has been missed out, in which case I think the general STW advice is to get it before you go, but/and to check the car with a fine toothed comb, and document it (video) when you pick it up.

Personally I'd go against this advice and get it from the car hire company. Assuming its not crazy prices which it normally isn't from a reputable hire company it just makes the whole pick up and hand back so much easier as they basically don't faff around checking as they know its insured - they probably self insure anyway and they are happy you've contributed to that!   Use someone else and they will be a lot more picky, plus if you need to actually claim it is going to be far more complicated.

Don't go cheap whatever you do, you are guaranteed to be ripped off.  A good local indie at mid market prices will be cheapest in the end, you then don't have to worry about it.  Avoid goldcar.

Depends where you go. Cabrera Medina in the Canaries come highly recommended, Klass Wagen at Faro airport… less so.

We had a car for Budget at Reus airport arranged through Jet2 and it was very little bother, we had third party damage waiver insurance as above which cost less for multi-trip than Budget wanted for a one-off.

I know someone who was doing a canoe competition in Poland, got to the airport, took out the damage waiver, then put the inflatable roof rack with canoes on the roof…

If you go with a broker read the contract carefully and cancel if necessary.

For mainland Spain, recordgo are quite decent and reasonable.

Thanks for the reply’s. Sorry for any confusion, It was the actual car insurance I was asking about. I thought there was the option to purchase car insurance cover cheaper before my trip.

If you do want to buy before I have used eversure.  Never had to claim yet though so can't comment on that side of it.

I've used Clickrent twice and just ticked the "fully insured" button. It didn't add much (under £100) and gives peace of mind. I haven't needed to use it though the company were pretty good in all other respects. Perhaps I'm being naive in not insuring it separately!

Separate insurance can save a chunk.   I pay £50 a year for insurance via insurance4hirecar.  However if you do have a claim you have to pay out first up to £1000 then claim back.  I have done it once.  Took a couple of weeks to get my money back.

Overall I think if you sre going with a cheap company then get their insurance.   Hoing with a big multinational use your own

We used eversure when in France a couple of years ago. I think they were recommended on money saving expert. Worth a look on there for advice.
