Afternoon all,
Need some automotive wiring help please👍🏻
Trying to breathe life back into my aged VW Passat with a new android info-stupid system. Went the whole hog and wired in a reversing camera too (or at least attempted to!). When I try to test it (putting it in reverse) it shows a ‘camera not connected’ little icon.
I spliced the live camera wire (red) into the reversing light wire (blue and black) using Scotchlok. Ground to brown wire. Then on the yellow RCA cable I spliced the red wire into the reversing light (blue black) at the camera end. I spliced the red wire at the dash end to a pink wire coming out the back of the android. I think everything is where it should be, but obviously not.
What would be a logical process to work through faults?
I do have a multimeter but don’t have much clue how to use it being honest. Should I check the live when in reverse? How do I use the multimeter? I did see some chap on YT saying I would need to splice something if using a cambus…this is all unfamiliar to me!
An idiots guide would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks very very much
Chris
It's a bit tricky to advise anything without wiring diagrams , but essentially, yeah, you want to be sure the scotchlocks have made good contact (quite possible the haven't) and that you are indeed getting 12V in the right place at the right time. Hopefully all those wires feed back to a miltiplug and you can check there.
Put the multimeter in DC volts mode and check you're getting 12V in the right plces with reverse engaged (engine off - ignition on).
Remember to have the negative probe on the actual gnd return wire rather than just on the chassis somewhere as you've actually used wires to connect rather than just bolting your gnd to chassis (I think I've understood that correctly).
If there is any CANbus connectivity then you'll need some more thorough instruction on where to access that.
Scotch lok! Just NO!
In the past I made money fixing towbar wiring where the cheap towbar fitting companies had used these evil things. Get rid of them before looking elsewhere.
Any help team?
Am I right in thinking I should splice the red wire off the yellow RCA to G5 (reverse detection)? Seen some YT vids suggesting this is correct if using a CANbus.
Thanks very much
The detail is a bit sketchy. Basically G1 to chassis ground, G2 to a permanent 12V supply and G3 to a switched 12V supply.
G5 needs a reverse signal which is where the connection to the signal feed to the reverse light comes in.
None of that is clear about any CANbus connections.
I'd guess F6 would plug straight into the rear camera (is that yellow RCA - it's not clear which RCA is which signal)
