It seems like our hitherto reliable Skoda Octavia Udderlet-Carrier is about to cark it at just over 116k. we've been planning on buying a 'new' car the first half of this year anyway, and decontaminating the Octy before putting it out to pasture as a second car for weekend use, but it seems like the engine management system has other ideas. I'm rather worried we'll be in the position of needing to buy a new car to replace a dead 'un, rather than being able to shop for one.

We've got a couple of options in mind: a post-2015 model VW Touran or a similar era Ford S-Max*, and hopefully there'll be a few ex-lease models hitting the second hand market soon. We tend to buy secondhand and then hold on to cars for 5-6 years at the very least; this has been our only family car for much of the Udderlet's lives.

So, here's a couple of questions:

1) Are we missing any tricks with the S Max / Touran? If Skoda di something Touran sized we'd go for it, as the Octavia has been better than the Golf it replaced

2) Any advice for distressed purchases like this? I really hate being in this position.

Many thanks in advance, hive mind.

* I don't drive this for work, Mrs Udder uses it for school run / work and we all use it for several long (150+) trips a year. Of the family, I probably spend the least time in it of anyone. I'd rather not have a people carrier, but there it is.

1/ Skoda Yeti's should meet the spec, nést pas. I don't think the Kodiaq has been out long enough. If you go diesel I expect there are a lot of bargains out there. Not an issue for resale if you drive them until they drop.

You may be able to pickup a 2nd hand EMU, but I think that it will need reprogramming to your specification of car. Better than retiring if just a box of electronics.
I think there are some companies out there, who can sort it, for not too many pounds.

Thanks Craig! We looked at the Kodiaq, and it sort of fits the bill, but it'll be too new for our wallets, I reckon.

News from the mech suggests (to my amateur noggin) that it's a bit more terminal than initially thought. Error codes for all cylinder misfires, camshaft timing and fuel pump. It's one of the TSI motors with a timing chain, so I'm hoping it's electronics and not a skipped, stretched, chain. Serviced to all intervals, but it looks like VAG adjusted the replacement intervals from 'lifetime of engine' to '140k / 5 years'. Ouch.
