Car ABS and spacesaver wheels?

My car has a spacesaver wheel which, I think, is an inch or so smaller than the usual wheels. I need to fit the spacesaver today, as, unbelievably, one of my wheels was stolen last night.

Does the smaller wheel affect the ABS? Surely the ABS is looking for different wheel speeds , so will throw up an error with the smaller wheel fitted?

And who pinches wheels? I thought that was a 80’s and 90’s crime. Clearly someone who wanted that type of Kia, yes Kia, wheel. And the tyre wasnt the best either. Words fail me.

The overall diameter of the spacesaver should be the same as a standard wheel. The space-saving bit comes from it being a lot narrower. This is why they have a 50kph speed limit and usually restricted mileage.

They're just to get you to a tyre place not to drive around on for weeks.

It will be narrower but the rolling diameter will be close enough to the road wheel.

some even use those weird folding tyres that need inflating before use and expand dramatically.

This – you should be driving with even more care than usual, and not be putting yourself into situations where ABS is needed (obviously it cannot be 100% avoided).

There used to be a car parked in the car park in Melksham which my mate and I use when we go to the pub, which had a spacesaver wheel on one corner, and it was like that for weeks, if not months - and it was regularly moved around, so obviously being driven with that wheel still on.

That's incredibly dangerous.. Those space saver wheels are just designed to get you to a garage, and carefully.
They are absolutely not designed to be driven on for any length of time.

If you have a crash running one of those.. Expect some difficult questions to be asked.

Njjjjjjjjjjjjaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa, depends on the car. The last car i had with a space saver the dia was about 40mm down. Recommendation was to use it on a non-driven axle. But it had the limitations of 50km at 50 kph then it'd really need replacing.

OTOH the ABS of that generation wouldn't even cut in unless you started braking at above 35 or 40.

Think that was the last car i had with a space saver or spare of any description.

Got overtaken on the motorway a couple of years ago by a guy in a Boxster with a space saver on the front and the front wheel on his passenger seat. I was doing about 115kph.

In theory they're also not supposed to go on the driven wheel/axle. Not sure what you do if it's an AWD car.

Thanks all, I fitted it, and it is around 25mm smaller diameter than the exisiting tyres. I havent driven it yet, as I dont use the car much, and I really dont want the car sat in the street without a wheel. Hopefully the new (2nd hand) one will arrive today, so I can get it fitted.

Can't see it impacting ABS, although I did once get rear tyres changed on a RWD car and driving home the traction control kept kicking in, I checked when I got home and realised they'd fitted the wrong profile tyres. Not sure if a slightly smaller diameter space saver could have that effect to?

I had Polo that needed new tyres, the fronts were worn so got replaced with a plan to replace the not very worn rears in a few weeks, after payday.

It really wasn’t happy with the new ones on the front, despite them being the correct size. Must’ve just been a big enough difference in circumference to upset the computer. Rears got changed a few days later and back to normal.

Probably not as bad as a lot of cars running 4 ditch finders 😁
