It's not, no - the codeine is reduced by a kitchen chemistry method analagous to meth production [reduction of allylic alcohol in krokadil v benzylic alcohol in meth]. It also needs to be demethylated - not sure how they accomplish that. The resultant desomorphine is significantly more potent than morphine, and will have a very different feel - clearance rates etc.

The horrific side-effects appear to come from the incompetent process used to prepare krokadil - it's not an inherent property of the drug to rot your flesh. More a feature of injecting a load of malformed, acidic, dirty shite into your veins on a daily basis.

As Garry said, desomorphine is a legitimate drug and has been patented and used in medicine.... although not currently.
The problems with Krokodil is the shite they cook the codeine with to make Desomorph.... and the all too common mistake of missing the vein and injecting into the flesh.

Another fine example, along with Crystal Meth, of how the attitudes and law's spawned by our socially responsible authorities are winning their war on drugs.

Pharmaceutical abuse in Eastern Europe has been rife for decades, these people are now managing to take it to a whole new level.

Very very sad.

Saw a comment that Russia has the most heroin users in the world. That amazed me, don't know why.

Mrs Daz is a drug worker. The life stories of some of the people she works with are beyond belief. It's hardly surprising they turn to drugs as an escape.

no money, no smack, no hope - give this cheaper thing a go

the saddest part will be young kids who will do it from peer pressure, for a dare, out of desperation, or hunger, or a way to escape the brutality of their existence

I think the fact that is so vast has plays a decent sized part in it, in that they are unable to police, care for, monitor the whole population.

That and the locality to the 'Stans and porous borders.

I've always took the stance on the side of "you take whatever and suffer the consiquences" and you get no sympathy from me..
However, as I get older I have become more savvy to the oppresion and degredation some people find themselves in and have started (just) to open my eyes to the fact that sometimes folks choose stuff like this for very specific reasons, not always thier own.

I'm not opening that linky, I fear I would not recover for a few days. 😐

High rate of Russia drug use is due to poverty, lack of treatment options, police corruption, tons of organized crime, an open border between Afghanistan and Kyrgyzstan. Having said that I have read that heroin addiction in Afghanistan and Iran is really terrible.

Yeh, I do remember seeing this pop up in the news a few times, sad and awful stuff.

Seem to remember most are heroin users that can't get heroin. But can get to a chemist, and a lot cheaper.

Suicide rates in Russia are very high too. As they are in a lot of former Soviet Block states. Grim.
