Layman's terms only please.

So, my son has an Amazon Echo Dot and we just brought him two Osram smart bulbs & a smart plug so he can smarten up his bedroom.

I thought they'd be plug and play.

The plug box lists we just need to download a "partner app". The box states it's Bluetooth.

The bulbs box lists we need a "partner gateway". The box states it's ZigBee.

The phones (Samsung J3 I think) Alexa app keeps crashing when I click on "enable smart home skills".

So, do I need to buy a "partner gateway? can Alexa not be this? If so, does it have to be Osram, or can I use any brand????

Any tips or advice appreciated, cheers.

Download Ziggbee and it will guide you through the process.

Its normally very straight forward after that.

If they work similar to Hue bulbs, you need a hub (box of tricks) to tie it all together. I guess this is what the “gateway” is. Does the echo dot work as a gateway? I’m sure google will tell you. Otherwise you’ll have to buy one.

I'd be looking to change any default passwords on all of this stuff, too.

you need a seperate zigbee hub, plugged ino yur router, alexa talks to that which talks to the lightbulb

The new Echo 3(?) has a built in zigbee hub, im pretty sure the echo dot doesnt

something like this should work, but check the smallprint

So, the "partner gateway" / hub doesn't HAVE to be Osram?
