We are using our PS3 for movies more and more and, due to having two sleeping babies upstairs, we don't have the volume at my preferred 5.1 surround sound shake your fillings out volume.

So this means that the fan becomes almost unbearably loud especially during quieter parts of films.

Can anyone recommend an effective and QUIET external fan?

Cheers

Buy a PS3 slim? TBH I can't hear mine whilst playing COD at 3am with the volume at 1, don't remember the old one being any noisier.

Whats it sat on, glass tables will vibrate more than MDF which will dampen any noise.

How dusty is the room, dust will clog up the heat sink (the PS3 is just one big one inside, hence why its so quiet compared to a 360) and casue the fan to come on more often and for longer.

I couldn't justify spending money to change from one PS3 to another! (Mine is an original 60gig fat one).

Might be worth checking for dust though - we had some building work done so it might have got clogged up.

Mine is a slim, but I don't notice the fan noise at all, even with the voulme turned right down.

How is an external fan going to reduce the noise of the internal one, unless you intend to disconnect it somehow?

The fan comes on when the unit warms up, I was kinda hoping there was an external one which was quieter in operation which effectively cooled the unit therefore stopping the built-in fan from kicking in.

OK, I assumed the fan was on all the time.

No, it comes on and gets louder during the course of a film. It bothers my wife more than me because she struggles with her hearing when there is background noise. I will be trying the cleaning the vents tip though.

Just get some air duster stuff and blow it through the unit

turn ther volume up, babies sleep through noise (if you don't start tiptoeing around them all the time)

The preferred volume is properly loud, shake the windows loud. We don't tiptoe around though really - we do try to be a bit quieter but certainly don't go daft about it.

I think the cleaning idea is the first to try, thanks folks.

mastiles, where have you placed the PS3?

I remember you posted before regarding something else about it before and it was in a cabinet.

mine was making a fan noise as i watch lots of films and im online for ages, in the end i set it up in the vertical position next to the TV and it made hell of a difference.

yeah it is in a solid wood cabinet...

Don't fancy moving it though as it is a hassle to get the cabinet out due to its very tight fit.

Mmmm that could be your problem then, put your back into it man and pull the cabinet out! set it up behind and to the right of the TV.

i think there's an OEM add-on fan but it's crap.

PS- Can we swap living rooms please?

Then put up with the noise.

I have a fat PS3, sat vertically next to the TV, loads of airflow, pretty damn silent too. Oh & I clean all the vents with a vacuum cleaner every couple of weeks.

If moving it would guarantee it being quiet I would do it - I just can't face the hassle otherwise.

You should have seen it (and the entire house) when we bought it - it had been sitting empty for 50 years apart from the farm animals the farmer used to occasionally keep in there. 🙂

I had mine tucked away somewhere - it used to sound like a Harrier Jump Jet.

I then moved it out and it was quieter and quicker.

However, the damage had been done and I got the 'Yellow light of death' last month - catastrophic failure caused by persistent overheating.

New slim one is lovely and quiet though.

so is it less likely to overheat if stored on its end?

It'll be less likely to get hot if it isn't stored in a little cubby-hole like it is now.

Also, when you clean it off, get a can of air duster spray at one end and put the vacuum on the other to properly suck out whatever crud you dislodge.

It dies have lots of space around and especially behind it - the picture doesn't really show it though.

That cabinet is defo your problem, air cant circulate properly. The heat a playstation can generate is amazing!!

I had mine in cabinet but had to remove it due to this problem. Still happens but only after several hours of COD in a roasting livingroom.
