Off camping in a couple of weeks time and need a light for the tent (smallish familly tent). Previously i've had a van and just used some 12V flourescents and a car battery. Now it's just a car and there are 3 of us so need something a bit more compact.

I was thinking that with the advances in LEDs there must be something cheap and small that will do the job. Any recommendations? Something dimmable would be good.

I got my brother one of these and it seems to be pretty decent. Useful for bike commuting too.

Get yourself to the local branch of Wilkos or local market/cheapo shop. i bought a 24LED saucer shaped light that runs off AA batterys. Hangs from the tent or has a magnet to stick to side of car. cost a couple of quid, provides plenty of light and lasts a decent length of time too. bit like the one on this link:

Ah Alpkit, i'd forgotten about them. They do a llittle lantern that might do the job.

Master 0f None - I've seen a few like that on Dealextreme but wasn't sure how much light they gave off. Sounds like it would be worth a try as they're only a couple of quid.

We have one of these

Brilliant battery life. It also works as a hanging light with the big diffuser removed

Too big for this trip

Black Diamond use a great little one....

There was a neat little torch/lantern being advertised on here a day or so ago, Alpkit, IIRC, which has a translucent tube that slides up and down as a diffuser, about 190lmn, and £18, I think.

The little Alpkit lanterns are great, use them as lights in the storage shed in the winter - think they have been updated this year?

I bought a rechargeable lantern thing from Tesco which has a built in battery and runs for about 8 hours on a charge. It's a bit bulky, but ideal for car camping. Previously I used a hurricane lamp for keeping the camp lit all night at 24 hour races, which would eat about a litre of petrol over night.
