Hi all,

Want to go camping with the gf for a couple nights for Valentines.

I understand it's going to be chilly, so somewhere low down, and sheltered is necessary.

Within around 3 hours drive from Edinburgh, and on the coast or a loch would be ideal. Facilities would be nice, but can wild camp if necessary.

Or is it just a bad idea in general?

Ta,
Duane.

Out and about, it is REALLY wild this year.

From MWIS,

Planning Outlook for all mountain areas from Tuesday, 4th February, 2014
Charts from the main meteorological centres continue to indicate a very high likelihood of a continuation of the present stormy conditions through the first half of February. Upland gales, sometimes storm force or above, will be very frequent. Precipitation will continue to be very considerable on western mountains, much of it of snow on higher areas. Very few periods of thaw on highest Scottish areas, but intermittent thaw higher areas of England and Wales.

What about some of the places that do wigwams or yurts? (If any are open at this time of year?)

It's actually not too cold at the moment, but it has been very windy recently.

I went from sleeping in -10 in November to relative warmth this month at 4 degrees.

I can happily share some good sheltered spots (both campsites and wild) in the West Highlands and Cairngorms if you like...but I have to agree with duckman that a wigwam might be a better idea unless you have the kit, experience and appetite for some harsh wild camping.

Depends on your kit really. But Comrie Croft'd be a good one- not too high, well sheltered with mature pines, well sloped so hopefully not too wet. And coincidentally has mountain bike trails 😉

I would go for a wigwam, any tent will just be damp and miserable.

Somewhere a long way South of Scotland. Unless your other half has a proven track-record of being highly enthusiastic about camping-based Valentines excursions.

I'd probably rather go to a wigwam somewhere like Invercoe than Strathfillan mind you (i know Jim reasonably well and pop in a lot, I do like the place, but it's not really in the best location or close to a pub)

They do the best bacon rolls in Scotland mind you 🙂

Invercoe is in glencoe, but there's more stuff to do if the weather is horrific and you've got (IMO) better scenery and a 25 min walk to the Clachaig.

Certainly everywhere around Kinlochleven is really really saturated your chances of finding a dry spot to pitch your tent are ......statistically insignificant. Go for a wigwam or hobbit house if you can get one.

The actual Strathfillan site is lovely- feels like the wigwams are grown into the hill- but yeah, it is not well placed. Walk along the Way to the bright lights of Tyndrum...

Nice looking hobbit houses at the tailrace at Kinlochleven, haven't stayed there but it's a good location, again not exactly the bright lights but at least there's pubs and shops and the ice factory and that (and a nicer bit of the Way, if you fancy a walk)

I think the Glencoe Mountain ones would come pretty low down my list of places to stay unless I was actually doing something there tbh! They're just lined up down the edge of the car park, and only sheltered from one side.

Hobbit huts at Invercoe
Or a bothy? Mrs Scotroutes and I had a lovely night out at the weekend in a bothy near Aviemore.

Thanks guys, looks like camping isn't the best idea then!

Any recommendations on best locations for Wigwams? Seen there are ones by Loch Tay for £80 which is quite good.

Ta, Duane.
