Hiring a T5 camper for a few days in the Lakes in April and was just wondering...where do you stay?
Not sure of the protocol there (or anywhere for that matter) - can you park up at scenic spots overnight or do you have to go to campsites? If you do, are there any that are recommended as being particularly good for campers? Prob a numpty question but not done this before! Cheers
It is possible but not entirely legit to stay in a quiet spot somewhere (Wild camping), but there are plenty of campsites.
You will probably want electric hook-up and somewhere to change the water somewhere which makes official sites more convenient. Around Keswick, Castlerigg Hall and Farm campsites are decent as is Scotgate just along the road in Braithwaite. But there are plenty of sites all over which take campervans.
Aye, best to stick to proper sites.
Get yourself to these ones:

Always worth asking at pubs. If your stopping for your tea they might be happy to let you stay over in their car park.
Tourist area + scenic spots = high likelihood of no overnight parking restrictions.
You can do it further out in the middle of nowhere but it can be a faff looking, especially if you are a bit fussy.
In town can be done but you need to be fairly low key, i.e close curtains etc before turning on lights, pop roof is a dead giveaway.
For stress free camping, especially with a family I would find a couple of sites. You can still take advantage of the van and find a nice scenic spot to have dinner etc before travelling back to the campsite, done that a few times.
I've wild camped a few times, it feels more risky when we stay somewhere secluded. An deserted truck/car parking area on a French N route was probably the least relaxed I've been...but we'd been driving ages waiting to stop for the night.
I look for a quiet area in town now, such as a residential area (but not right outside someones house) or business park etc...just avoid big car parks with no kerbs etc as they tend to attract boy racers in the early hours. The plus side is the street lamps mean you can just open a rooflight blind rather than turning lights on.
Does a T5 camper have an onboard toilet and shower, just asking? 😉
Wasdale probably, pop your cash in the nt box though. Braithwaite has a campsite and probably a few others.
Cheeky camping just outside Elterwater short walk to the Brit pub. Dungeon Ghyll Pub turn a blind eye to campers as long as you buy food and beer, the breakfasts are very good. Tarn Hows is a nice spot turn up late leave early never had any problems.YHA will let you shower for a couple of quid. Campsites are charging silly prices for small motorhomes.
My T5 has a toilet and shower(outside) 😀
Can recommend lane foot farm at Braithwaite. Lovely laid back site that lets you have a camp fire.
Tiny shop selling a few essentials and sweets.
I go to Skelwith Fold site. Lots of 'classic' rides can be done from there 🙂
Scotsgate for Keswick rides
MrsT prefers / demands top class sites 😉
Pretty safe to assume that most things are illegal, but I wonder how it applies technically?
Tired of driving, pull over for a kip - asleep: breaking the law?
You're a night-owl, you pull over to read your good-citizen's handbook - Not technically sleeping, but it's in the middle of the night: breaking the law?
Is it that you're always supposed to be moving? What if you break down?
I guess all this is academic as there's unlikely (I hope) to be police in every lay-by and beauty-spot waiting to fine/tazer you. But in this age CCTV/ANPR is possible for FPN'?
I'm curious as to what law you'd actually be breaking anyway? Is it the same as any other parking fine potentially?
Plenty of places to wild camp in the lakes if you're prepared to hunt them out and you arrive late/leave early.
T5 toilet and shower? Probably a portable chemical toilet only unless it's LWB
He shits in a hole dovebiker.
Ahhh... the popular past time of looking down your nose at T5 owners... About as interesting as the T5 evangelists!
Don't do what the Australian tourist in a massive hired camper did one fine summer day when we got stuck behind him on a narrow Lakes lane. He caused absolute chaos and was making progress at the rate of about 100 yards an hour, my brother got out and went to see what he was doing and came back to report that the bloke was utterly drunk, there was a stack of empty beer cans on the dash and he was in a state of blind panic at the hatred he was receiving from everybody and the narrowness of the lane. Eventually he found a patch of grass beside the lane and pulled over, with relief I expect. It would have needed a Police motorcyclist to arrest him for drink-driving.

If their rental is the same that kinda limits where you can overnight, maybe better to rent a non-lifestyle camper with all the facilities onboard.
Shiteing in yer van? sod that! Especially after a day in the hills, Cow pie in Keswick and a few scoops of Loweswater gold! 😯 😆
And it's shiting in the woods that leads to popular van parking spots(it's not wildcamping) becoming not van parking spots.
At least bag it and bin it as I've seen many popular spots ruined by overuse....It starts off 1 or 2 and that's cool but before you know it theirs shite everywhere.
Woods? that's worse, I'll stick to public conveniences thanks! 😀
This looks handy - few suggested places in the Lakes: https://searchforsites.co.uk

Ah you can't beat a good country crap !
Everyone gets caught short half way round a red run ,right? 😆
no, just you, it seems...
+1 for Skelwith Fold. Really good campsite with the Drunken Duck pub a short walk away. We've also stayed at Windermere, another great site with a pub onsite and a 20 min walk over the hills to Stavely and the amazing Hawkshead brewery. There also might be a small bike shop nearby.
Cheers for the replies - will look into some of the suggestions.
Few legit sites and a few cheeky stops sound good, with well-timed dumps when doing a cheeky one.
Might shit in a bag and tie it to a tree branch in the garden of a dog owner - some karma that would be.
+1 for Skelwith Fold. Really good campsite
Really!! It's not a bloody campsite unless you can put up a tent! That's just a glorified car park with a plug
