Surfer elder has been after a good camera for a year or 2 and she has narrowed it down to 2 models, also criteria being she wants a flip screen and WiFi. She has narrowed it down to a Canon G1x mk2 or a Sony A5100 and she is interested in taking up close shots etc as oppose to panoramas and so on.

Apologies about not knowing anything about photography but I know there are a lot of keen and expert photographers on here so thought I would ask?

Thanks

For macro etc I'd get the A5100 simply so you have a choice of lens.

Also look at the Panasonic Lumix GF7, its a similar sort of thing, and about the same size. Currently £250 at Jessops, with the kit lens.
It won't do really close up photos with the kit lens, but you can buy cheap extension tubes. They will let you focus a lot closer for macro.

Thanks. It even occurred to me that a changeable lens is a wise move. I think its a bit more expensive of the 2.

I'll tell her to look at the Lumix one, thanks

Assuming the kit lens on the A5100 neither of these looks ideal for macro

This based on the imaging resoutce Optics page for the relevant lens/camera (Large area covered is a negative for macro). With a specialist lens the A5100 would be best here but I don't know the budget. Sony tend to be pricey for lenses.

Tha panasonic LX100 looks better, but lacks a folding screen

Here is the imaging resource best macro list

But it isn't a great help

The FZ1000 and and Sony RX 10 are stand out all in one cameras. Both are bit bigger and more expensive than the Canon but I'd much rather have them

Final thought I think Olympus do a macro capable kit lens the 12-50 which was bundled with the OMD em-5. I'd buy the lens used and a more modern body with flip screen and wi fi

Thanks for all your help! She has gone for the 5100 (she did have her heart set on this) which by the sounds of things may not be absolutely optimal but sounds like a reasonable decision. She did find it cheaper online and John Lewis kindly offered to price match so all good 🙂

Thanks again and maybe I will post some pics !
