Inspired by some guy I follow on Google+ I saw he was using one of these:

Having just sold my compact because it wasn't getting much use and my phone takes nearly just as good photos, I've been toying with the idea of getting a camera that takes photos. Is this a good one at a good price?
Will it last a long time and make me learn things about photography or is it overpriced and has way more features than any amateur could ever need?
Many thanks,
Chris
Don't know a great deal about the Olympus PEN, but I believe it is a good camera & that appears to be a good price for it.
It'll do fully auto & manual, so as long as you learn how to use it and what you need to change to get a certain change in the pics you are trying to take then it should fit the bill.
That camera with that lens doesn't have a massive zoom capability. It's ok, but not great. What types of things do you expect to be taking pictures of? Do you think you'll need the reach of a high zoom lens, as that will need another lens. To be honest, I reckon that one would be fine to get you started and you can see how it goes from there.
Hopefully this should bounce the thread up a bit and you might get some more info from people who know specifically more about this camera than I do....
Great camera at a cracking price and the M4/3 format looks set to stay a fair while. Outstanding JPEG output (if you don't want to get into raw) and good high-ISO performance. Personally I didn't go a bundle on the ergonomics of the E-PL1 and bought the Panasonic GF1 instead, but fundamentally there's not a world of difference. Considering it's cheaper than cameras like the Canon S95, it's a win unlest absolute pocketability is a must (in which case you'd have ruled it out already).
