So looking to replace my Lumix FZ38 with something which is will take better quality pics especially in low light. The two above are short listed. both are same price more or less.
RX100 has a new 1" sensor and fast F1.8 lens. The NEX has a full size APS-C sensor and comes with a F3.5 lens. I don't plan to buy any more lenses in the near future ...
Camera is used for all sorts including bike touring, moutain biking, hillwalking, days out with kids etc. It's not a hobby but I do like a good photo!
Which would you buy?
Bear in mind that f1.8 + 1" sensor isn't the same optically as f1.8 + aps-c sensor.
The larger sensor will also bring benefits in low light.
However, it does seem a bit pointless buying a interchangeable lens camera if you aren't going to take advantage of having several lenses. Plus the rx100 is more compact, has a built in flash and proper mode selector dial.
Yes the mode selector does appeal...find the menu system on NEX not ideal.
This weeks Amateur photographer mag has a review of the rx100.
Also consider the Nikon P7100 & Canon gx1 although I don't think they go to 1.8.
Also check the aperture throughout the zoom range. My Nikon P300 will do 1.8 wide open but rapidly closes up as you zoom - even the slightest zoom from wide has it falling quite substantially.
Cool.. Looks like I'll pick up a copy of the mag..
Some good test pics here for anyone interested.
Ive had the NEX7 for a few months now and its the best thing I have had to a really compact and very easy to use camera.
The NEX5 was my first choice but when I read about the 7 I waited for its release and not regretted it at all.
The best advice I can give is to get down to the shops and have a play with each one of them, that way at least you have a real feel for them...
Hey stumpy got a copy of AP; quite a positive review.. Interestingly they also note it has the same image chip as the NEX 7 which must be good news!

I would pick the RX100 if you plan to take it more often outdoors. It's only 10.2x5.8x3.6 cm and weighs 240 grams. The image quality is also superb
I've got a Sony a77 SLR and the RX100 looks to be much the same in terms of features and performance, but in miniature.
Looks like a superb wee camera, provided you can live with the non-interchangeable lens compromise.
Highlights (of a77)
Focus and handling speed
User interface
Focus peaking for ultra-accurate MF
Multi-frame NR
Auto HDR
Auto panorama
Image quality right up to ISO3200 (beyond gets sketchy but multi-frame NR often rescues it)
I know I want an RX100 now!

That's inevitable due to how the f number is calculated. It's not (as I had assumed) to the iris actually getting physically smaller as you zoom.
I say inevitable; there are constant aperture zooms around at the high end - no idea how they manage that.
Yeah, I know that molgrips, but it is something to consider as not all designs are the same...
For example, the P300 is 24-100 f1.8-4.9, whereas the Olympus xz-1 is 28-112 f1.8-2.5, so maintains a wider aperture throughout it's zoom range...
Can't remember why I went for the Nikon now....
So I have an RX100 on route from Hong Kong right now, due to be here on Friday. Will let you know how I get on and post some sample pictures!
It's en route, not on route.
Nice one...getting It by Friday will be good going!
Molgrips, it's coming from Hong Kong, not France.
Oh, well then
??
That's better....
I would do a winking smiley thing, but It's a pain on my phone...
;o)
Well RX100 arrived as promised from HK. Have posted some test shots here...all taken with auto settings.

You should read the Sony RX100 review on digitalversus.com. I just want to buy it now.. 🙂
I'm amazed you don't have any links where we could buy such a thing.
yer, link to hk supplier please 🙂
Just heard about this camera.
I've been itching to upgrade my SLR to a video-capable one, but replacing my LX3 with this seems like it might give me a more usable package.
Some of the video footage on Vimeo looks incredible.
.
Obviously the price is very high. (similar to a 600D with lens!)
Any pointers to good prices would be welcome.
Edit: looks like £440 is the going Hong Kong rate. Anybody do any better than this?
