I have a Panasonic Lumix GF3 with a 14-42mm lens with a max of f3.5. I used this camera for three weeks in the US last year and i am very please with the results, however, it is very disappointing in low light, such as in bars, restaurants when taking photos of people and when im holding it in my hand.
I am am considering buying a f2.5 14mm prime lens for the camera. Will this be a lot better? or am i asking too much of the camera?
Second choice is to sell the camera/lens (hopefully £300 as its the power zoom lens and add the £120 to it to get a Sony RX100 or Powershot s100/110. I dont think id miss the fact the the sensor is smaller.
Get the 14mm it's a great lens, the sigma 30mm is also good. The panasonic 20mm is a nice lens but the autofocus is awful
I have
Sigma 30. Very good
Pana 20 very very good
45-200. Really excellent but not what you need
if i just used the 14mm all the time. do you think id miss the zoom? it only goes to 42mm at the moment
You will miss the zoom but you will take the camera out more due to its smaller size and so you will take more photos.
The 14mm lens is a cracker and the large sensor of the G range is not far off DSLR quality as I recall from a test report some years ago, in fact I seem to recall a G1 came out better than a Nikon D300.
You would have to buy some pretty serious DSLR kit to beat the G series cameras and then you'd have a massive camera to lug about, which you wouldn't..
You would miss the sensor size, believe me. I bought a canon Sx230 thinking the same as I was after a smaller more pocketable camera than my G1. The SX sits in the cupboard under the stairs and I just picked up a GF2 with 14mm lens. Liking it so far, still got the G1 with zoom as well.
I really want one of those 15mm bodycaps.
from a youtube video i just watched the 14mm is not worth bothering with as it isnt much better that the 14-42mm in low light (low light is my main concern) and im certainly not gonna dish out the £200 notes to get the 20mm F1.7 lens.
Im tempted with the RX100. 1" sensor.
Bars and restaurants normally need a flash, esp at night.
