Is it possible for me to set it up so that I get an alert whenever one of the people I follow tweets something?
(My daughters school now uses Twitter to broadcast information about the sports clubs, practice sessions, etc and I'd like to be notified rather than having to keep opening Tweetbot)
I don't think you can. But you could add them to a list or create a dedicated Twittter account to follow them with to make it easier to find their tweets
How about trying IFTTT... fairly new and I've not used it myself, but might be able to do what you require.
That's a good suggestion, except Twitter are now blocking IFTTT, as they seem to be on some crusade against 3rd party API use. Why even have an API? 🙄

Yes I think it is.
Well it's now actually working...... having just updated to iOS6 I'm now being notified the way I wanted. I'm not sure if this is from the built in Twitter app, Tweetbot or a change I made on the Twitter web site but who cares!!
