I saw a picture that piqued my interest in the Sony World Photo competition:

Sport shortlist. Calcio fiorentino resembles a combination of rugby, football and wrestling, which originated in 16th-century Italy. Two teams of 27 players battle it out on a pitch covered in sand for 50 minutes. It’s a brutal game and there are plenty of injuries - despite this, no substitutions are allowed. Fighting techniques, such as martial arts, are permitted

So I checked out the sport.....a combination of skill, history, funny trousers and ultra violence - whats not to like?

You have to give credit to a sport that only has three rules..

1. No kicks to the head

2. No more than 1 on 1 in a fight

3. No substitutions allowed even in the case of injury or death.

"Wheres the ball?"

"...there's a ball?"

That is awesome. Fast track the lot of them into the Italian six nations squad, they could hardly do any worse. At least they'd put up a good fight..

The first time I went to Sienna, I found it hard to believe they race about 12 horses around the square when you compare the size of that to a race track like Sandown.

I'd still back the Wimbledon '88 team to kick them all off the park.
