MegaSack DRAW - 6pm Christmas Eve - LIVE on our YouTube Channel
Between 3 and 4 weeks ago, my brother bought a car from a used car dealer down South somewhere. At the time of the deal, the engine light was coming on, and the dealer said he would sort it - and any other troubles the car was having before my brother could pick it up.
Since then, the engine light has come on again and my brother has just taken it in to an independent garage, only to discover that there are a whole number of serious problems.
What recourse does he have, and how should he go about pursuing this?

plenty of rights, see here:

edit:
Your right to reject a second hand carIf there's a problem with a second hand car soon after you’ve bought it, for example, the car develops a problem you wouldn’t expect for the car’s age and mileage, or it turns out to be not what you’d been lead to expect, you may have the right to ‘reject’ the car and get your money back.
However, you have only a ‘reasonable’ time to reject a second hand car. There’s no clear definition of what a reasonable time is – you probably need to do it within three or four weeks of buying it. And if the fault is very obvious you may have less time.
If you reject a second hand car you must stop using it.

take it back and get your money, walk away. trust me.
The dealer has a right to diagnose and fix the vehicle first. I would give the dealer a chance to fix it, taking it to another garage to get it looked at will always result in a long list of problems if you get what l mean.
Whats the reason the light is coming on anyway?
Why did your brother even buy a car with a potential problem as obvious as the engine light on ?
Yep, give him a chance to fix it or take it back. He'll probably tell you to get stuffed, or use a warranty, but make sure you get evidence you gave him ample opportunity to get it fixed. Best step is to write to him (recorded delivery), explaining the problems, what you want him to do, and the what you will do if he doesn't fit it/take it back.
If that fails, get it fixed yourself and send him the bill, when he doesn't pay take him to small claims court.
Read what I posted up there ^
It has unexpected problems, which are unlikely to go away in a hurry. Reject it, get your money back and walk away.
Dave
I wouldn't say they were "unexpected problems"
He bought a car with the engine light on.
That would come under "expected problems"
the engine light was coming on, and the dealer said he would sort it
Sounds like it's worth trying to get the money back.
Go in hard and firm and take no BS from the dealer, threaten small claim etc.

Unless that's on the the sales invoice, he could be out of luck ?
