starting to think about looking for a used treadmill for the winter, up to £150'ish, can anyone advise me on what features etc to look for and maybe some good makes/models?
anything that's from argos, forget it.
I bought one second hand a year ago, for late night/early morning training, they do help. I looked at more gym/commercial use rather than home use.
first thing, decide on your top speed. if you can hit 6 minute/miles in training, then get a machine that'll do 10mph/16kph or more. that way you've future proofed yourself from having to replace it with a faster one next year. if you can stretch your budget up to £250, that'll get you a good quality machine with good elevation as well.
personally, I was looking for a while, and I picked up a horizon quantum hrc 2, (means nothing)it's a gym grade machine,16kph top speed, and 10% incline, compatible with polar hrm's. this was a couple of hundred bucks off gumtree. ebay has some good bargains as usual.
the best bit of advice IMO, is..... get a dog. my 2 year old boxer dog, Cooper and I, run every morning, for half hour before breakfast, kids, lunchboxes, work etc. made a massive difference to my hill climbing on the bike. and as soon as my legs have recovered from racing in the lightning run 12hr last weekend, we'll be back on it, again.
hope this helps.
thanks, good tips. had'nt considered what speed the thing will do.
know what you mean about running more with a dog. but was reading an article this morning where the guy was saying to use a trainer in order to work on technique and as a softer (on the legs) way to get more run time in.
No, just put an extra layer on and go running outdoors!
the best way to improve technique, reduce knee injury, build ankle strength. run off road, simple.
use the info as you wish. everything is from what I've learnt, over my life as a runner. i'm still over 17 stone, only injuries I get are blisters. on sunday I run a 60km offroad ultra, and have 24 hour endurance race in 6 weeks. so when people say you get injured more offroad, boll*cks.
hope this helps
