[Closed] Buying a new van via a broker, they pre-register, any experience?

Our current vw van is coming up for 3 years old (end of warranty etc). In the past we have flogged our old ones at this age and bought another one up to 12 months old, then use for 2 years and do the same again. Never really lose that much over the 2 years, if anything at all going on last time.

However, looking now there are a few brokers (good reviews, on Honest John etc) who can supply brand new ones for the same price a vw main dealers are asking for recent used ones. So thought we may as well buy new instead this time if it's going to be about the same price - c.15-20% less than the new rrp.

To get the good price, the brokers order lots but have to keep the van on their books and pre-register their orders, particularly from VW- ie although you get a new van delivered, you don't get the V5 back in your name for 11 months, as effectively the 2nd owner. Because of this I'm wary. Anyone else experienced this? Legit? Cheers

Mate has had a T6 kombi since the summer on this arrangement, I was very skeptical but he’s not had any probs so far.

Why would you not get the V5 back for 11 months?

I can understand you being the 2nd owner but that sounds strange. Are you the legal owner or are they? At what point does it change? You would need a V5 to say you are the legal keeper even if they are the legal owner.

V5's are not proof of ownership. Get a receipt / record of your payment for that specific vehicle and you should be fine in my eyes. If the van is in your possession and you have proof of purchase then that should be all you need.
It would be interesting to see how the company handles speeding tickets etc if they are the registered name on the log book mind.

I looked at a few of these brokers when I was buying new.
Some were up front about you not being registered owner, some never mentioned it until prompted.
Main dealer pointed me toward this

https://www.honestjohn.co.uk/faq/internet-sales-and-brokers/

Then came up with a deal that allowed me to scrap my old T4 and get a better deal than the broker.

Legalities aside, in your case it wouldn't matter as you would have bought second hand anyway, at least this way you know the previous owner hadn't racked up miles in it

It's quiet normal.

I've got some contacts if you need any

But why don't you get the logbook when you pay for the vehicle?

Because the broker is using their fleet discount to get the reduced price, and I guess they keep it registered to them for a certain period as to not arise suspicion .

Revs1972, thanks for the hj link, interesting reading. Maybe I’ll try pushing the local dealer first for best price and see what they come back with before doing anything else. Thanks

Surely the person insuring the vehicle has to be the registered keeper

I have never leased a vehicle, but afaik , the company who is leasing it to you is the registered keeper /owner. You just tell your insurance company you are not the keeper / owner

No, you just need to tell your Insurance Company.

The 11 months, no V5, is probably some sort of tax avoiding thing

There are two reasons why you don’t get a V5 when you buy a vehicle:

1) It’s registered as a demo and VAT rules say they can’t send it you for 6 months for VAT reasons;

2) With vans, I believe that its because the company is only leasing them from VW for the first year, so you need to be careful that the company doesn’t go bust having your money and you not actually owning the title to the vehicle.

Update - our local main VW dealership have come back and beaten the broker deals on a new one by a fair bit, so no probs with V5, well chuffed & now have on order. To get loads off you have to 'buy' on finance (which we'd pay off the next day), and they knock more off on their loyalty scheme if your new one is registered in the same name and address as the old one.
So we now have a 2016 black T6 SWB DSG T30 140 Kombi 30K miles to get sold in March. What's best, Ebay? Gumtree? Autotrader? Cheers
