(though the cynic in me wants to say that the majority of people do it because everyone else does...)

No no, you misunderstand me, I wasn't saying anything about my beliefs, i was only pointing out what i thought was p_l's point. That you thought it was really important that people understand what it is about, but also misunderstood what it was about. As it happens, I agree with you on this, it is really important. I'm on your side here.

I also think that the close link between Help for Heroes, which seems very much about modern conflicts, means that Iraq and Afghanistan have much higher profile in the current poppy campaign

Considering HfH, the current casulties, the warm home coming given to troops, and the poppy appeal advertising i'd suggest more people are thinking about Iraq and Afghan than just the directly effected minority.

(though the cynic in me wants to say that the majority of people do it because everyone else does...)

But we also see how people who don't do it are treated or regarded.

In my mind, it's purely to remember our dead, conflict regardless.
Modern Tommies are no different to those who died in previous conflicts. The reasons for them dying may be different but the people are the same. Just normal people sent to do their jobs by other people who believe it is worth it.

Next time, I would suggest a non exemption parade in the area for the parachute regt (all btns) and the royal marines (all cdos) serving and retired.
Then maybe burn some qurans, draw some cartoons of mohammed and maybe even call him a dickhead or something.

See, all you've done is lower yourself to their same ignorant bigoted level.

Let's try to explain this for you...

If one or two British soldiers murder innocent people, does that make all British soldiers murderers?

See, if you went and acted as you suggest, then you might well be offending all Muslims. Do you think that's fair and just, considering the actions of a tiny, tiny minority of hateful bigots who use Islam as something to hide behind?

Why not just ignore the tossers, and get on with not hating others?

Quick to condemn, some folk, but not so quick to take a look at themselves....

Don't try crawling out of it. That's cowardly.

At least have the balls to stand up for your bigotry.

The very fact we stand by and allow this to happen is a sign of our strength and tolerance of the misguided in allowing them to voice their opinion.

Personnally, I would say f tolerance and just take a flame thrower to them.

Oh, I don't read the Daily Mail.....but consider the responce if we were take a similiar action in say Saudi. And, do you think the 'take it on the chin' and 'respect their opinion' would have worked in the last World War, or the one before it? I know what Sharpe would of done, and Cpl Jones.

How would that help? It'd kick off massively between them, the police would be overwhelmed trying to maintain order and the nutters of both sides would have a field day with no referee.

Windbag, are you suggesting we take a lead from Saudi?

And how about we replace 'the misguided', with 'those with differing opinions' ?

Who's 'we'?

What's this 'allow' business? People in this country have the right to express their views. Even if they are ignorant narrow minded tossers.

British Law 'allows' this, not you, not I, not any other individual. Please don't include me in your notion of 'us'. I am not like you.

I take that as a yes? We should follow the example of the saudis in terms of political tolerance? Really?

Backhander, maybe you need to clarify that you were parodying a bigoted dickhead, and you actually believe the complete opposite of what you said, maybe emphasising that such a parade would be the most ridiculous f*cking thing to do. That would clear up elf's confusion.

I am not like you. Obviously not, you would probably bend over backwards and take it - and therefore let someone else fight for YOUR freemdom of speech, so don't worry, your not included. Maybe you will sleep better tonight.

Why make inflammatory statements then act all surprised at people's reaction?

Bend over backwards and take what, exactly?

British Law 'allows' this,

British Law? What's that, then?

I know of an English Law. I know of no British Law. I wouldn't normally be so pedantic, but figured seeing as you put it in bold type it must be important.

Ok elf, I stated that I was joking which you branded me a liar by calling me a bigot and a coward. A reaction is one thing, the accusations you have made are quite another.
I don't really care what you think but I'm not entirely happy with your insults. I was going to post that maybe we'll meet one day and could establish which of us is the coward but this is tinternet and I know that I would be reverting. I'm pretty chilled nowadays and will wish you goodnight thankful that you're not in arms reach.

I think you may find you were thinking of X-factor, but the principle is similar

In defence of elf, i don't think he meant you were a bigot and a coward. I think what he meant was that what you said was bigoted and you subsequent behaviour was cowardly. Hope that pours oil on the fire.

Fair point. I meant 'UK Law', although as you say, there is 'English Law' which covers England and Wales, Scottish Law, and something else in Northern Ireland. By 'British Law', I meant that which is pretty much universal throughout the UK, which stuff like freedom of speech is, as far as I know. I'd be interested to know is Scottish and NI Law differs from English Law in any significant way, regarding this issue.

But you know what I meant anyway, I suspect....

Backhander, I din't see where the 'joke' was. I din't feel it was intended as a joke. I fail to see how I or anyone else should have interpreted it as a joke really.

Hey ho.

what you're talking about is actually EU law

So we wouldn't have freedom of speech if it wasn't for the EU ?

You know sometimes the EU just doesn't get the credit it deserves ..... this sort of stuff should be publicised a lot more.

Blimey I think there's more hatred displayed here than by those who burnt the poppies.
The symbol of the Poppy is important to meas someone that has lost family in conflicts up to the Falklands.
But the Poppy is just that, a symbol. The remembrance is within me.
Quite frankly the burning of Poppies makes me think is that it, is that your best shot. sad very sad.
However I will admit if I had been passing nearby I wouldn't have thought it wrong to deliver a swift elbow in the ribs, it's just I'm not good with words.

+1 for oldgit!
Just cant believe i've just wasted 20 minutes of my life reading this load of bllx thread which i hoped would have been an interesting debate - but in true singletrack fashion has been hijacked by the attention seekers on here!

It's added nothing but to highlight the fact that
A. some folk on here are really up themselves
B. don't have a clue what they are talking about
And
C.need to get out more on Friday nights!

You know who you are!

So, you respond by hijacking the thread to have a pop at others, yet add nothing of any relevance yourself? 😕

And then you hijack the thread to have a pop at peasnotwar for hijacking the thread without adding anything to the original subject...

...er...hang on...

@ MidlandTrailquestsGraham ...... pmsl

But then Elfinsafety has a point. rather than add anything to the thread (thought i was by adding support to oldgit?)... i really should have started a totally seperate and pointless thread entitled...... "OOH OOH, LOOK AT ME, LOOK AT ME"!!!!

gotta laff....
