A friend of a friend has a holiday apartment in Bulgaria which they vist 4 times a year.
To be able to buy another apartment to let out they have taken residency.
Once we have successfully managed to rip up our rights to travel on mainland Europe will their residency afford them any eu rights?
If so, is merely owning a property enough to get you residency?

Surely No one knows what rights a uk citizen will have in the EU27 yet post 2019?

My parents were in Bulgaria until just before Christmas last year. After the Brexit referendum the president of Bulgaria offered unrestricted residency and citizenship to all ex-pats living there. From anywhere they may have come from, but especially the British. The Bulgarians know they will want to stay and that the country needs the British money in the local economy.

I'm not sure what the fallout from brexit will mean, but I can't see the poorer countries in the EU turning money away.

As above, no one knows - I think one thing worth considering though, is whilst they may get to stay EU citizens if we leave, their EU rights will be limited to when they’re in the EU, they won’t for example retain EU workers rights in the UK, I guess they can apply for Bulgarian passports which will makes travel eaiser, if they can actually leave the UK, I’m sure I read we may end up cutting ourselves off completely at least short-term, flights grounded, ferries and trains stopped.

At least it’ll be interesting.

Take into consideration any benefits being paid to them too, no one knows what will happen.....

What a fabulous situation to find yourself in.

Thanks Brexiters.

Ultimately I just want to be able to retire to the sunshine without fear of getting booted out of a country.

Actually...... it's not. It's a shithole of epic proportions. At least the NE area. Desperate poverty, infrastructure that makes banana republics look 1st world paradises.

Do you want to buy a house? 😕

*I'm not selling this am I?

The Bulgarian residency would hopefully be a passport to retiring in Spain.

It's weird seeing a photo of a hill with trees all the way upto the top. 😀

I'm seriously considering German citizenship. Will hold out and see if it ever gets to the point where the UK leaves the EU.

If the current bunch of arsebunglers keep faffing as they are I think there is a chance it won't happen.

Fortunately I've been in Germany long enough to qualify for citizenship, not just residency. And, fortunately Germany now allows dual citizenship.

Oh, and what I meant to say is, I'm not sure if residency gives you the same rights EU wide as citizenship....
