Treat you like a numpty even if you know what you are after ?Even if you don't what happened to "Oh a customer who isn't sure what they need maybe i can help " .You walk in and all there trade cronies are in and it makes you feel like the tenderfoot just walked in the saloon in Dead Man's Gulch !Always been like it but haven't needed to bother them for a while .

ah but once you're treated like a "trade crony" it's very nice indeed (esp if you're still a tenderfoot). My builder's merchant has been unbelievable helpful during my self build project. Really agressive pricing (like 70%+ off waste water plastics for example). I never really have to double check my prices as I know he's always doing his best for me. AT one point I think he was making only about 5p a brick off me.

Another local plumbers merchant is very friendly even for green horns. In fact I went in there earlier this week and the guy on the counter apologised for "teaching me to suck eggs" but then went on to point out what I needed to do before I installed a component which I wouldnt have though of doing, and then probably have wrecked the component.

There's rubbish builders merchants out this way too: TP for one - nothing costs the same from one trip to the nex, and County are a pain to get decent prices for. Luckily I have Bradfords here and they are teh awesome.

I HATE TRAVIS PERKINS they have a yard less than a mile from my house but because I don't have an account their prices are stupid high & they won't drop them. The staff are mostly useless too, I assume monkeys being paid peanuts 👿 They don't get my business. I'm talking about their Clapham, West Sussex yard if anyone else would like to avoid them too.

In an attempt to make building/plumbing seem like rocket surgery, when really it's more like playing with lego

😈

We used to get members of the public coming to our trade counter with more knowledge than the employees, telling us what they wanted over what they really needed. How we loved giving 30% off RRP and letting joe public think the were rubbing elbows with the real McCoy. 😉

Elliots in Ringwood Hants are good too. Both in price and customer service.

The young lad behind the counter in the local heating spares merchant has a real attitude problem. Irratates the life out of me how on the odd occasions we have to use the merchants, the obnoxious little twunt has try and tell you how to do your job. Really, really winds me up, to the point that I now deliberately go out of my way to wind him up

The lads on the plumbing spares in the same shop are spot on and genuinely helpful.

Myeh - I have been going to a local backstreet ironmongers a bit recently and never know the 'right' name for stuff. The old duffer is always helpful and the last time I went in all I wanted was two bolts with wingnuts and he just gave them to me. I felt like I had been welcomed in to the inner circle 🙂

Mine is fine as i have been going in for years i think he likes my drawings and requests for bits I have no idea of the name.
he likes the fact I can solder , use compression and pushfit. He still shakes his head when I am buying gas stuff and gives me the look [ he has stopped giving me the chat]. He beeps and waves when his van passes me now.
This has made me realise I do to much DIY
Fitter own bathroom central heating etc.
